We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sheana Mosch. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sheana below.
Sheana, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
Over 90% of all basketball trainers are men. As a female, I know how important it is for girls to have female role models in their life. One common issue that many trainers get wrong is training girls the same way they train boys etc etc. The way I see this taught the most incorrectly is men who teach girls to shoot the way that NBA men shoot. Example: most high level male athletes begin their shot by bringing the basketball up to the level above their head before extending to their release. This is good form for men. Girls, however, find greater benefits from using a lower release point, helping us with a quicker shot and relying more on momentum to get our lift. Girls who are taught to bring the ball above their head must rely too heavily on strength to shoot the ball. Many male coaches don’t know this is harder for us because they aren’t women! If they studied the women’s professional game, they would see that WNBA shooters have a lower release point across the board. Girls need female role models!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Basketball is just in my heart, and has been for a very long time! I played college ball at Duke where I scored over 1000 points and was captain of 2 Final Four teams. In high school I was an All-American, Pennsylvania Player of the Year, and had 3066 career points. For 11 years I had the greatest job in the world, playing professionally against the best players and traveling the globe to places like Turkey, France, Russia, Israel, and Spain. Now that I’m no longer playing, I run my basketball training facility called Mosch Ball in Summerville. I am passionate about teaching kids the fundamentals at an early age, and continuously challenging every kid who walks into my gym to become the best player they can possibly be. I do private workouts on a regular basis, as well as group ball handling on the weekends where players drill hard together and then play 1v1, 3v3. For the older ballers, I also run an Ages 35+ open gym every Wednesday night from 7:00-9:00. Throughout the year I have specific camps and clinics to target a certain skill set. Coming up on December 3 & 4 is the fan favorite annual Holiday Hoops Shooting Clinic. Here kids get to concentrate on fixing their form, shooting hundreds of purposeful shots, and playing a lot of pressure shooting games. Dressing up to ball in your best/goofiest Christmas outfit is highly encouraged!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I was playing an away game in Spain. We were down 1 point with 5 seconds left in the 4th quarter. My team quickly ran a play in which our post player was able to kick the ball out to me for a 3 to win the game. I let it fly, it felt awesome coming off my hand………but bounces off the rim and gets knocked out of bounds!!!! With .5 seconds left, we take it out of bounds under our basket and I run to set a screen for my post. The defense switches, so I”m wide open directly in front of my inbounder who throws it to me. I catch and shoot as quickly as I can. My whole arm gets slapped so the same time the buzzer goes off, so does the referee’s whistle. With no time left on the clock, I stand on the foul line all by myself understanding the game lies completely in my hands. I push away the nerves and focus on my routine. I make the first one and tie up the game, but the best is the second I sink the second, my entire team rushes the floor and jumps on top of me!
Since I was a teenager I always made myself work on pressure foul shots because I knew in order to handle the difficulty of that situation I had to be ready. So in all my Mosch Ball workouts, I teach this to my kids as well. To handle pressure, we have to face it on a regular basis!

Have you ever had to pivot?
One thing that I am a part of now that I am very proud of is I coach a 7th grade girls Mosch Ball travel team. I started this team when the kids were in 5th grade, and after our 2 years together they are now the 2nd best team in South Carolina. I love coaching them because they are all wonderful kids who listen and work very hard! Since I got them early, I have been teaching them to play the game the right way with amazing fundamentals, team play, floor spacing, defensive tenacity and intelligence, and mental toughness. I even teach them concepts I learned at Duke! Because our travel ball season runs from March-June, it’s a big pivot I have to adjust to regarding my training. We travel outside the state to play against great competition, so a good portion of my time is committed to this team. It’s worth it to me, because they love to learn and keep getting better!
