Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shea Smith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shea, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My mission is to empower women by encouraging them to make small yet impactful changes in their lives and businesses, Whether it’s assisting them in establishing a healthier home environment or honing their leadership abilities, I provide guidance that yields long-lasting outcomes that extend far beyond their immediate spheres.
For too long, I felt like I couldn’t make significant changes – in my life or the world. I felt constantly paralyzed by inaction and life seemed to be passing me by. That is, until I started implementing one small change in my life. That one small change created a ripple effect in my life that led to another change and another change until I found myself repositioned for bigger impact in my life and the community I serve.
I knew I had to help women other create sustainable changes that make them feel good about the life they are building so they can be empowered to thrive in their space as well.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a speaker, leadership coach and clean beauty advocate. Since 2014 I have helped women make sustainable changes in their homes and equipping accidental leaders with systems and tools to run their businesses more efficiently.
I’m really proud of my work as a clean beauty advocate and being a part of a team of consultants who helped get the first major reform to cosmetic safety passed since 1938. Using my voice and helping women use theirs is brand advocates has helped me understand the true power of what women can accomplish when they lock arms together.
Speaking at trainings, events and workshops has given me the ability to truly help women cancel their impostor thoughts and activate them in taking the next best step towards their big dreams. Creating meaningful change in your life doesn’t have to be hard and painful. I like to bring in the fun so women can. enjoy the process!
Any advice for managing a team?
Maintaining high morale must start with empathy. Gone are the days where tough love rules and “just make it happen” is the guiding force. Meet your team where they are, acknowledge the challenges they are facing and when appropriate, let them in to the challenges you face as well. Creating an environment where team members are heard and understood can lead to the overall feeling of being valued which is critical to the team’s morale.
Creating a system for regular celebrations is another way to not only boost morale but effectively lead your team. For most people, it is easier to remember all the failures, missteps and gaps to goals. By building a time into your weekly or monthly routine, you give a regular space for your team members to focus on what they are doing well and where they are moving the needle forward and by default, will sustain more momentum driving them towards success. If you have someone regularly not able to celebrate any/many wins, it might be an opportunity to find a position that is more aligned with their strengths so they can better support the team and feel more aligned in their work.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I had my first daughter, I was presented with a challenge. My husband and I both worked in the entertainment industry with long hours and lot much room for quality time as a family. I could have stayed the course but felt the pull to create a more flexible life and pivoted to pursue entrepreneurship.
It was not an easy road but as I faced every challenged I had to remember what the primary goal was and then decisions fell into place after that. I created several businesses that I ultimately closed down but each served as a step towards the next business and moved me towards the goal of having a career that served our family, not the other way around.
