We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shayla Dunlap a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shayla, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
My business partner, Lauren Payne, and I started this venture after doing Concierge COVID Testing. During our visits, everyone kept asking for more services! The company organically grew from COVID testing to offering a numerous amount of services performed in the home. Some of these visits are such as Adult/Pediatric sick visits, strep/flu/RSV/COVID testing, IV hydration and even cosmetic injections. The main steps we had to take was hiring the right team of providers, marketing and just making sure everything was done correctly. Key challenges in setting up our practice was just making sure everything was done correctly from a legal standpoint. I don’t think we would have done anything differently, as we’re super proud of how we got to where we are! Advice I would give any young professional who might be interested in considering their own practice would be to surround yourself with the best people you can!

Shayla, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Lauren and I are both Family Nurse Practitioners. We got into our industry by wanting to take care of people. We provide a number of services, but all are done within the patients home. We provide luxury in home visits consisting of sick visits, IV hydration and cosmetic services. We problem solve for patients by removing the annoyance of driving to a doctors office, waiting in the waiting rooms and those annoying bills that you get because insurance didn’t cover the visit. What sets us apart from others are that we serve our patients with a kind heart and we never settle. We’re constantly striving to provide a better, faster and even more luxurious service. Lauren and I are most proud of how we started as Nurse Practitioners but have turned into young entrepreneurs. We want our potential clients to know that if you choose us, we won’t disappoint! Our team courageously takes initiative and delivers exceptional experiences.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back and choose the same profession, I would do it every. single. time. My favorite part of being a nurse practitioner is being able to serve my patients with quality care.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Advice that I have for managing a team, and maintaining high morale is to make sure your team feels included. Lauren and I always want our team to know that they can come to us for anything. We love taking our team(s) to lunches, dinners and other events. We also always encourage them that if they have something that they feel makes them feel important, even something as simple as pink colored gloves, just let us know! We want them to know they are important and very much appreciated!
