We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shay Franklin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shay, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I believe I was born to be a creative story teller. Since I was a young child I have always had the passion to create stories and put on in person productions. I would have my family gather around and watch my entire performances especially during the holidays. I remember my older cousin purchased a camcorder that plugged into the TV so I can perform because I wanted to be on TV.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I launched a service based production company during Covid to amplify the work of women in the field of on set productions. Our main goal and purpose is to infiltrate a male dominated industry to create equal opportunities for women who are DP’s, Cinematographers, Directors, AD’d, G&E professionals, camera operators and more.
Our long term goal is to provide services to larger studios and productions.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
To support women artists in male-dominated spaces, society can implement a range of strategies, including establishing targeted funding and grants, creating mentorship programs, and promoting visibility through exhibitions and media coverage. Fostering inclusive platforms and educational workshops can empower women with essential skills, while community-building initiatives and diversity in leadership can enhance support networks. Advocacy for policy changes promoting gender equity, alongside the creation of safe, collaborative spaces, will further enrich the creative ecosystem. By embracing intersectionality and engaging the public in discussions about the importance of these efforts, society can cultivate a vibrant and equitable environment for women in the arts.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to create transformative art that inspires connection, sparks dialogue, and challenges societal norms. Through my work, I aim to amplify underrepresented voices, particularly those of women and marginalized communities, fostering a creative ecosystem that celebrates diversity and encourages collaboration. I strive to use my platform to advocate for equity in the arts, promote awareness of social issues, and nurture a sense of belonging in my audience. Ultimately, I seek to leave a lasting impact through my art, inspiring others to embrace their creativity and pursue their truths.
