We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shay. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shay below.
Shay, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
I have never been one to follow trends or play it safe. The industry loves neutral and mass produced, but I love bold, custom, and personal. I treat every space like a piece of art, not a checklist, and that changes everything.
When it comes to my clients, I genuinely care. I put thought into every detail and make sure the experience feels personal and intentional. It is never just wallpaper or styling, it is about creating something that feels like you.
Clients always say, “This feels like me, but better.” That is the goal. Being a small business means I get to break the rules, trust my gut, and keep it real with the people I work with

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, I’m Shay, interior artist, design consultant, and founder of The Goods by Shay. I create bold, custom wallpaper, textiles, and premium finishes that help turn homes into artful, personal spaces. I also offer styling services to bring it all together with intention.
I started this brand to fill a gap I saw in the industry. People want unique spaces that reflect who they are, not just what is trending. My work is all about storytelling through design, and I care just as much about the experience as I do the final result.
What sets me apart is that I trust my instincts, break the rules, and design with feeling. Every project is personal, and I am proud to have built a brand that values heart, creativity, and individuality above all else.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Honestly, really and genuinely caring about my customers has been the most effective strategy. That kind of energy travels far. Word of mouth has been huge for me. People remember a good experience, and I am known for showing up, overdelivering, and making the whole process feel personal and exciting.
Instagram has also played a big role. I have built a strong community by being consistent, even when I do not feel like it, and just showing up as myself. I keep it real, I keep it fun, and I stay approachable. That mix of authenticity and good work has helped me grow a loyal following that actually converts.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I funded my business entirely on my own. No loans, no investors, just me, my savings, and a whole lot of patience. The growth was slow and steady, but that pace allowed me to stay within my means and make thoughtful decisions along the way.
I used what I had, stretched every dollar, and reinvested every bit of profit back into the business. It took seven years of consistent work, late nights, and calculated risks to grow into the beautiful retail store I have now. It was not overnight, but it was real, sustainable, and fully mine
