We were lucky to catch up with Shay recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Shay, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?

In 2015 my partner was a bystander at a shooting, where his life was taken, this literally shifted my life. At this time I was studying Esthiology and working as a train dispatcher. Due to my mental health I had to take a medical leave of absence from work, which in the beginning didn’t help. But I knew I had to find a way to heal and continue to live. Because of my studies in skin care and the benefits of natural ingredients on the skin. In 2016 I started a hobby of making natural skin care products as a coping mechanism to help with my grieving, depression and anxiety. This is how ButtaH Beauty was conceived, it also allows me to live out my childhood dream of being a chef but as a beauty chef. You’re probably wondering what is a beauty chef, it someone who curates skin care products. ButtaH Beauty was officially birthed in 2017 when I took my creations to local pop-up shops.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

What is the largest organ of the body? Its skin. I have meant several people who don’t know how to take care of their skin. This is why ButtaH Beauty exist. Our vision to elevate wellness by creating and providing exceptional quality, pure, plant-based products that are good for you and the environment.
Our mission is to encourage people to choose a natural, safer and effective way to take care of the largest organ of their body, the skin.
We are a purpose driven brand that is committed to sourcing premium quality natural ingredients to create products that are formulated to help improve your skin’s health, make you look, smell and feel great!

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?

My hobby turned business started as a self funded business and to be honest I have lost track of what was spent initially. Since the transition from hobby to business I have been award grants and still self funded.

Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.

All of our products are carefully developed with the consumer in mind. Products are handcrafted with love from scratch in small batches to ensure freshness and viability. Our finished products are packaged in sustainable containers, never tested on animals, preservative free and contain no harsh chemicals and toxins. Handcrafting products from scratch can seem like a daunting task, but I learned that will patience, consistency and discipline product formulation and manufacturing is not daunting.
