Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shawny Ellsworth. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shawny, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents were hard working immigrants. I was 2 years old when we came to the states. My parents had very little money and truly started from the bottom. We lived with another family, so 7 people in a 1 bedroom apt. My parents did what they had to do to provide for us. I slept while my parents went to pick strawberries at 4am. Fast forward to when I was 10 years old, they purchased a donut shop and best believe they put me to work during summer break. I used to stand on a stool while ringing up customers. I learned the value of hard work and perseverance. The best gift my parents gave me is learning how to hustle at a young age. I watched them Never give up, even if it’s tough or if you feel like it’ll never get better, it always will. Bet on yourself, you will never lose,
Shawny, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Exquisite Aesthetics was a dream of mine since I was 16 years old. I used to browse for hours at a local beauty store in Sacramento. This gave me the idea of opening a med spa, since my dream was to be a doctor. 5 years later I got into the mortgage industry and I put my dreams on hold for 12 years. After the birth of our first child and pregnant with our second, I decided that it’s time to finally start my career in the beauty world. Although the money was fantastic in the mortgage industry, I knew something was missing. I wanted to help people feel confident and look their very best. As a teen with acne, I felt I was “ugly” and I knew outside appearance can really mess with ones self esteem. So, I vowed to create a safe space where I can help build confidence and change lives.
I’m so proud that I was able to accomplish changing the lives of my clients, students, and I even created a skincare line that is used all over the world. Not only do we provide skincare, such as facials, we also provide cosmetic tattoo services, scar and stretch marks camouflage, as well as overall wellness for the mind and body. Once you find a solution to a problem, the rest is easy. Just execute your dreams and remember your “why.” My “why” was remembering the joy I had walking into my first real beauty store and seeing how happy everyone was (including myself). I was able to find products to make me feel prettier and more confident.
Moral of the story is, once you put your mind to something, you can achieve it. I’m living proof that you’re never too old to start your career in something you love. I was 33 years old when Exquisite Aesthetics was born. I’m now 42. =) it’s never too late! Just do it!
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Most entrepreneur story starts out with them growing their company with less than a couple hundred dollars and creating their brand out of their garage or even living out of their cars. Mine is a little different. I believe that you need money to make money, I didn’t have any financial support from family, so I hustled a 12 hour shift at my mortgage sales job to save up money to build my brand. You do not have to quit your 9-5 job right away, you do what you have to do to support your family and business and still live comfortably. I didn’t want to sacrifice my lifestyle and I wasn’t afraid to work 2 jobs to build my company. After 6 months of working both jobs, I was fortunate enough to quit my 9-5 and focus on my business full time up until covid hit. In California, we had to close down our “non essential” businesses for about a year. Because I’m a rule follower, I reactivated my mortgage license, temporarily paused my business and got back on the mortgage train. I didn’t miss a beat! I got back at it and was one of the top producers and instead of closing my business down all together, I expanded my business. You see, I didn’t let pride get in the way. I was top producer, not because I loved selling mortgages, but because of Drive and Determination. If any of you know much about Human Design, my human design is a “Manifestor” so, I made sure to manifest what I wanted with hard work and perseverance.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation was soley built on doing what I love. I truly believe that I am a healer. Whether it’s the mind, body, or soul; I can transform my clients from within. I’ve also changed the lives of the students that have trained with me. In return, they’ve changed the lives of their clients. I’ve perfected my craft, but also I’m always a student. I’ve kept up with the latest protocols and modalities so my clients have the best experience. Plastic surgeons reach out to me with referrals for their patients, so that is the best compliment since my dream was to be one of them. Now, I’m working beside them as their perfecting session.
