We recently connected with Shawn Thwaites and have shared our conversation below.
Shawn , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
My journey started with me falling in love with the steel drums at the age of 9. Becoming a professional musician on steel drums and being the first to study the instrument as my principal instrument at Berklee College of Music. The moment I heard the beautiful sound of the instrument, I knew we were inseparable.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was introduced to music by my parents, Robert Thwaites and Nola Barton, who both hail from the twin island republic of Trinidad & Tobago, the birthplace of the steel drums. In the early 70s, they made the journey to the United States, bringing with them the rich cultural heritage and values of their homeland. Our household was a vibrant reflection of Trinidad & Tobago, where music was not just a form of entertainment, but a way of life, deeply intertwined with the traditions of Carnival—a celebration heavily influenced by music.
My father, who inherited the national instrument, the steel drums, was a pivotal figure in nurturing my connection to our cultural roots. My parents did an exceptional job of passing down this heritage to me and my brothers, ensuring that we remained deeply connected to the rhythms and traditions of our ancestors. It was in this environment, surrounded by the sounds and stories of Trinidad & Tobago, that my love for music truly blossomed.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My creative journey is centered around supporting people in their endeavors. Whether it’s through offering insights, helping with strategies, or simply being a sounding board for ideas, my goal is to contribute to the success and growth of creators and innovators. I strive to provide knowledge and tools that can help people achieve their full potential and make a lasting impact in their fields.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The impact my artistry has on others, bringing them joy or inspiration, is a powerful motivator. It’s incredible how my work can touch lives and create meaningful connections.
