We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shawn Speidel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shawn below.
Alright, Shawn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Unspoken gradually formed over time, it wasn’t an over night thought by any means. I technically started Unspoken back in 2013 when I was still just a freshman at Neshaminy highschool and have grown and adjusted the brands purpose and vision as we grew over the years. The ideology behind unspoken started to develop as I had found the world of graffiti and pieces done particularly by an artist by the name of “Banksy”. I was captivated by the whole graffiti scene from the start but I instantly took a particular interest in Banksy’s style of art. Banksy’s style spoke volumes in such a simple way, his art carried a purpose beyond just enjoyment, they each held an unspoken meaning to them. The idea that thousands of people walk past their artwork and some people would take it for face value and see it as just graffiti and keep walking while others would look at it for what it truly is and see the deeper meaning behind the art, the “Unspoken” meaning as I like to call it was the coolest thing ever to me. Almost immediately I wanted to emulate that and started brainstorming how I could do exactly that in my own way and I stumbled across the idea of putting the artwork on clothing instead of on walls. Unspokenbrand started off just creating designs on shirts that had a deeper meaning to them of any sort. As we grew and realized the potential this idea had we started creating designs and refining our ideology behind the brand so that each design had a deeper meaning specifically about topics that kind of go unspoken in society that a lot of us share similar thoughts on but don’t often have the opportunity or a catalyst to bring up a conversation about these unspoken topics.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Unspoken is a clothing brand dedicated to making thought provoking designs that hopefully start a conversation that otherwise might’ve always been left unspoken. We try to shed light on topics or thoughts that are important to discuss but also topics and thoughts that we feel don’t get talked about enough. Unspoken got it’s start in Pennsylvania specifically In the Philadelphia area in 2013 and has since expanded to the Tampa Florida area.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Every aspect of life and business depends on the ability to pivot with the times at hand. Unspoken has been through several rebranding stages in which we’ve pivoted to becoming a more refined version of what we are trying to create. In the past when I first started Unspoken in 2013 the brand was simply about making thought provoking designs, not really about any subject but rather artwork that people would look at and think about. After our first rebranding we pivoted towards making designs that would bring awareness and start discussions about certain topics that we felt needed more attention. That pivot was the major pivot to lead us to the brand that we are today.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think peoples ability to deeply connect to our designs and the topics they shed light on has helped us gain a foothold and a high quality product to match has helped us continually build the respect of the community we are building.
