Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shawn Mosch. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Shawn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Crafting has always been a part of my life. Sewing was one of the ways I used to express my creativity, creating clothing for myself and making doll clothes for my siblings. Both my mother and her mother are talented seamstresses.
Later on I moved to scrapbooking as a way to document special events and occasions in our life. I looked at these scrapbook layouts as mini pieces of art. When others would see what I created and ask me how I did that, it just naturally turned into me creating tutorials and step by step instructions for them to follow.
Once I owned a Cricut machine I would see others struggling with the steps on how to make things work the way they wanted them to, so transitioned to creating videos and tutorials that taught people how to use the Cricut Design Space software. I believe that if you understand how to use the software, you can then create just about anything you can imagine.
Knowing what I know now, the only thing I would do different would be to look at what I do as a business earlier than what I did. If I would have learned the blogging and business side of things earlier then more people would know about me and what I do.
Shawn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
It was not until 2020, while my college aged daughter was back home since college was all remote at that time, that she encouraged me to turn this hobby of making things and teaching others into a business. At the time, I thought that the market was already too saturated with crafting bloggers and that there would not be a place for me, but once I started to look at things as a business I found that there were a lot of people teaching how to make a specific project but not so many focusing on teaching how to use the Design Space software which is where I focus my services.
In every tutorial or video I create, I try to teach people something new. I feel that this helps them to better understand why the Cricut or the software that makes it run does things the way it does. I have said that I feel like I can solve about 90% or more of the questions that Cricut owners have. The other 10% is typically a software glitch.
Also, when I am in various Cricut related groups I see so many people giving incorrect information, which only confuses the new or less experienced Cricut users. That is why in my group I always make sure that each question has an answer that solves the problem the user is facing.
I have some free handbooks and cheat sheets on my site, for those that just need some high level reminders on a few of the basic terms and topics. For the users that want to really learn to master their Cricut I have an online course. The best thing about this course is that if Cricut adds a new feature, or changes the way the Design Space canvas looks I can simply update the videos in that course! Then the next time the user opens the course they will have that updated information. No need to buy a new book or spend hours on YouTube searching for an updated video!
I have had many of my followers tell me that they have watched hundreds of videos on a specific topic and either could not follow them or understand the process, or it just did not seem to work the same for them when they tried it, but when they followed my tutorial it worked perfectly! I love when I am able to solve a problem that someone has, especially if other crafting bloggers have not been able to successfully explain the same topic. Honestly, I do not see the point of creating a tutorial or video if you are going to leave out an important tip or step.
Additionally, my followers appreciate that I am always totally honest with them. If I do not like a product, I will not promote it. I will never tell people to go and purchase something just so that I can get a commission on their purchase. I will always tell people how to get the best price on the best products. I think that this is because first and foremost I am a thrifty woman who has had to watch her budget over the years. I have learned to save money where I can, and when and where to invest on good quality things that will last.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I am a problem solver, so when I can help a Cricut owner solve a problem and then successfully finish their project it gives me so much joy. Recently I have been presenting in online crafting summits, where several crafters each teach a session on a different topic or project. When the sessions are over there is a group where the attendees can share their completed projects. It is so much fun to see someone else making a project that was inspired by something I taught them!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal has always been to help Cricut owners understand how to use the Cricut Design Space software. I love it when someone has an idea in their head, or sees some inspiration on Pinterest, and then reaches out to me to ask how they would accomplish this with their Cricut. Solving that problem for them has always been my goal.
Then, if I can teach them how to look at that inspiration piece and see the steps in the process like I do, I know I have really done my job well!
