We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shawn Brandon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shawn, thanks for joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Well, I’ll say it’s a tough road and just be prepared to not earn much at the beginning. As you build your brand and people get familiar with your work you’ll start getting offered bigger paying jobs. I started at the bottom working with local bands and earning minimal but I gradually worked my way up. As my work got better and I started making industry contacts thats when you start getting offered touring gigs.
Shawn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Shawn Brandon from Tampa, FL. I have always loved photography since I was a kid so it was a gradual progression to want to be in this area of work. With my passion for music I knew what I wanted to photograph and live my life on the road, touring from city to city with my favorite bands. I offer photo/video content to my touring clients and that lintels capturing their live shows in a way that their fans who couldn’t make the show can get a visual performance of them through their socials.
What sets me apart from others is my drive to give my clients the highest quality material in the quickest timeframe so it can be posted by nights end. I’m proud of how I’ve grown and how I can recognize my clients wants and needs and deliver exactly what they’re looking for every time.
A rule of thumb I live by is separate yourself from the million other people out there doing the same thing, and that will get you the work over others
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Getting repeat clients because they feel that I’m the one who can bring there performances alive through photo/video work
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes indeed, to work with the biggest artist around and have my work viewed by millions of their fans
