We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shavon Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shavon, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Before I started my business anointed braids, I worked as a full-time medical assistant in the hospital during this time, I was doing hair part time on the side just to make some extra money. A year later I ended up expecting with my youngest son and so I decided to quit my full-time job and establish my business full-time working from home without knowing the outcome I was able to find a workspace for a decent price, and as soon as I quit my full-time job, Covid hit and I was not allowed to work in my shop the first four months I was working that was the most. I’ve been tested in my entire life as an adult when it comes to my career it took a lot of faith and patience to stay consistent and not give up and now I am one of the fastest braiders in Minnesota and I have a clientele base of over 600 clients.

Shavon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Shavon Johnson. I have been braiding since the third grade I learned how to braid on the school bus from a cousin of mine and I used to practice every day on kids hair on the way home. Eventually that turned into me braiding kids hair in my neighborhood and just charging a small fee and that’s how I made my extra money on the side, that’s when I knew I had a passion for the love of hair. I feel like what Sesame aside from. Everybody else is my exceptional, fast service that I offer.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started anointed braids, I was just doing it part time for extra money, my full-time job I was a medical assistant at a hospital. After a while I started getting request to do hair while I was at work and that’s when I knew I needed to make a decision, so off faith, I decided to quit my day job and open up my business full-time, and during the time that I quit my job to open my business Covid happened so I wasn’t even able to work the first three months, starting my business full-time. It took a lot of patience and resilience to get through the first three months not being able to serve my clients or utilize the space that I had rented.

Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
In the early stages of my career going full-time I always wanted to do a high profile client, so when Andrew Wiggins got drafted to the Minnesota Timberwolves, I decided to inbox him and offering to do his hair if he was looking for a braider and surprisingly he reached out so the first three years of his career I was able to do his hair and he was one of my first high profile clients and that really helped me pull in a lot more clientele as well it’s also opened other doors for me to do other athletes and celebrities.
