We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shaunt’e Lewis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shaunt’e , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I always had a knack for creativity from a young age. Painting my bedroom walls and upcycling old clothes were things I loved to do. But it wasn’t until I reached my mid-30s that I seriously thought about turning my passion into a career. Life experiences and self-discovery played a big role in seeing creativity as more than just a hobby—it became my way of fully expressing myself and making a living, especially during the pandemic.
Shaunt’e , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always had a passion for art since I can remember, but it wasn’t until about six years ago that I started creating again. I worked as a hairstylist for 15 years until 2020, when the pandemic made me realize I wasn’t pursuing my true passion. So, at the beginning of 2021, I took a leap of faith and became a full-time artist, and it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made! In just 12 months, I’ve achieved things I could only dream of, like being featured on the front cover of the art section in the NY Times, painting live at the Indy 500, and collaborating with companies like West Elm, Makers Mark, PBS, Vuse, NCAA, The Meijer Corporation, and more.
My art is bold and colorful, with clean lines that depict female representation and empowerment. I often focus on the eyes and multi-dimensional skin tones, as they tell stories of joy and pain. Through my paintings, I express my experiences and share my story. Many have told me that my art has lifted them from dark places, giving them strength and courage. My goal has always been to uplift and empower, and I’m happy to say that I’m achieving that goal daily!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part about being an artist is the ability to connect with people on a deep level through my work. Seeing how my art resonates with others, uplifts them, and brings joy into their lives is incredibly fulfilling. It’s a privilege to be able to express myself creatively and make a positive impact on others, whether it’s through evoking emotions, sparking conversations, or simply brightening someone’s day.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Society can significantly support artists and creatives by recognizing and valuing their contributions to culture and innovation. This recognition includes providing platforms and opportunities for artists to showcase their work and amplify their voices, thus increasing their visibility and impact. Financial support is also crucial, involving investment in the arts through funding programs, grants, and sponsorships, which allow artists to pursue their projects, exhibitions, and professional development. Affordable studio spaces and workspaces further facilitate artistic production, enabling artists to focus on their craft without financial burdens.
Mentorship opportunities and resources can help artists navigate the industry, promote their work effectively, and sustain their careers long-term. Collaboration and networking play a vital role as well, fostering partnerships between artists, creatives, businesses, and communities. These partnerships encourage cross-disciplinary initiatives, promote diversity and inclusivity, and create opportunities for knowledge sharing and collaboration.
