Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shauntay Pitts. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shauntay, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I think legacy is so vast because it’s layered. The legacy I want to leave is just that. Layered with energy and empathy and a real energy and impact that you can’t experience anywhere else. It’s not only a magnetism so addicting it’s also life altering. I think we are given gifts that are meant to awaken energy in others. I hope my legacy will be about what I did and how I made people feel.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was always passionate about video production from a young age, inspired by music video directors, I followed my love for music and visual storytelling. I initially started my journey in college at Suny Albany and then my brief time at NYU Polytechnic. That’s where I was introduced to Alley NYC, at the time one of the most authentic co-working spaces in 2015 and I started my journey creating videos for new brands, new tech companies, etc. I was creating videos for pitches, founder videos, advertisements and these experiences shaped the type of business and offering I saw was a demand. Before content creators I was working as a creative professional, at least that’s what I would call it, haha! I was providing video or branded content better yet to tell the stories of entrepreneurs new products or services. I was freelancing for a over 10 years providing strategy, campaign building, and creative content for great brands that have grown over time. Being surrounded by new business owners, and artist helped me understand the formula of video that connects with customers and fan bases but also being able to use data and metrics to influence particular strategy for each individual client. When I was working at Aaptiv my art and creative intuition and talent I was able to help build the fitness advertising on social and my time there I was able to provide the company with creative work that really helped them grow. I was able to take my visual artist background and merge that with business to do rebrands, lead various campaigns that had millions of impressions and conversions and built a creative team that lead them to funding, more users, and a bigger team. I pride myself in knowing my work has a scientific formula I like to call mixed with all the storytelling, style, originality, and creativity of a creative that’s necessary for originality and growth for brands. I know all of my work is original and represents a brands story without compromise.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The biggest lesson I had to unlearn is when you are creating for business, you can not be too attached to certain aspects of the project. Yes you are the producer, director, and creator but the final outcome will most likely have notes and things that evolve overtime that better fit the company and you will have to just make those changes or adjustments. It may not be fully changing the project either but sometimes it may be too skewed to art vs advertising needs and formula. Be okay with knowing the concept is still yours and working but don’t be married so much to certain aspects and small things that you’re not listening to your clients. I’ve worked on many projects and in the beginning I used to have an emotional response to teams asking for changes but that was me in parts of my ego, but overtime some of those changes helped from the aspect of acquisitions and learning formulas for meta and other platforms. That made me a better creator and led me to creating a formula that is an ultimate mixture between art and business creative.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
for me the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is being able to take a project, concept, idea, from start to finish. It is almost magic to strategize ideas, get the green light, create the team, direct, and film, edit the project then see it go to launch. Then you see how people interact with it, how it helps build the brand. The payoff of seeing brands grow after your campaigns or videos is such a rewarding feeling. Then myself as artist when people are resonating with my stories and filmmaking it lets me know I am truly doing what I love and it’s inspiring for me to keep going and knowing that I am able to live my dream, regardless of setbacks is truly an amazing feeling.
