We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shauna King a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shauna, thanks for joining us today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
I began working as an educational consultant after gaining experience as a teacher, principal, and school district administrator. My information and knowledge had kept me current for several years, but without ongoing training, listening, and learning from those still in the classroom, I would have lost touch with the current issues and pain points that they were experiencing. Each industry evolves, and in order to continue to support schools, I must be able to recognize and connect with where they are. The best investment I make is to pay and attend conferences. During these conference, my time is spent learning as a student rather than teaching and it keeps me informed grounded and current, allowing me to continue teaching adults who teach children.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think what has set me apart in my field, is my genuine desire to allow the client to lead our relationships. Often business and consultants come in with a pre determined almost cookie cutter plan that they try to sell a client. Each of my sessions and consultation packages are customized after a detailed interview and listening session with the client. When people feel heard and valued, they are more likely to return and trust your services.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me is current or previous clients. Referrals are the best marketing.
