We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shaun Gunnels a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shaun, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I’ve spent the last year working on my debut solo album. It’s my first time as a songwriter writing music from true events in my life. Sometimes the process is easy and fast, sometimes it takes weeks and weeks and lots of heartache to paint the picture I’m trying to paint.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Shaun LaFerris. I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas and moved out to Utah in 2020. I’ve been doing music for the better part of 20 years. My main band was The Background (2005-2015). Southern Weather (2016-2020). This is my first time as a solo artist. Give my music a listen!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’ve been working retail for 20+ years. I tend to float from company to company never finding my way. My hope is that I can be successful enough with music that I can work for myself and provide for my son.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Keep going to concerts! Go to local concerts! Most of the money we make is from playing live.
