We were lucky to catch up with Shatara Winston recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shatara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I’m grateful for my parents, I wouldn’t be the woman I am today without their love and guidance. My parents set a strong foundation, their heart to serve and support others played an instrumental role in how I move through life. My parents never forced their beliefs on me but rather led by example. My siblings and I had the best role models in the form in parents. It was truly a gift to witness their faith, strength and perseverance. I’ve seen them do so much with very little and never once complain. Seeing my parents unselfishly put others before themselves and extend kindness to all, helped me build a strong relationship with God and love for other people no matter where you come from.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hello my name is Shatara affectionately known as Shay. I am a Behavioral Health Clinician, for the City and County of San Francisco. I am also the owner of Charmed and Bubbly an online/ popup boutique. During the pandemic I was looking for away to connect with my pre-teen daughter by doing something fun and creative. My daughter Ria is Charming and I consider myself Bubbly; that’s how we chose the name for our business ( Charmed and Bubbly). We started making bracelets and selling them to church friends and family members. Our accessories started to get a little following and we began getting request from folks online. This was really exciting, as our following grew we begin to expand the products offered and started selling other accessories, like headbands, hats, earrings, brooches, shoes and many other items to make you feel fancy. We enjoy seeing people smile and feeling at their best, and our accessories help you get that feeling
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that multiple people in the same industry as me dose not eliminate my audience. If you’re passionate about something, you believe its your gift/calling; God will always make room for you. It dose not matter how many people are doing/offering the same product as you they will never offer it the way you do and someone somewhere is looking for it from you!
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My daughter is my business partner. I’ve known her since birth she is fourteen years old and we co-created this business during the pandemic. I had an accessory line a while back; she and I revamped our products and what we wanted to offer. This kept us connected and motivated during a very difficult time.
