We caught up with the brilliant and insightful SharRon Tyrell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi SharRon, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
My defining moments came in phases. I have always performed in the arts. However, it wasn’t until I graduated from college in 2007, and could not find a job, which inspired me to zone in on my passion for the arts. I wrote my first play “Hard Knock Life” in 2008 which was inspired by not being able to find work, really struggling to take care of myself. All of my defining moments have been curated by life experiences. The next experience, my husband and I tried for children, with not being able to conceive. I later wrote a play called “Why question God” I was in a really bad place. From then life became worse and after suffering a miscarriage my life was shattered, from that moment I chased after the life of motherhood, several rounds of various fertility treatments. I was suffering in silence. I didn’t want anyone to know that I was dying inside slowly. However, my tribulation inspired me to write “Chronicles of an Empty Womb” which was literally my inner thoughts brought to the stage, no longer suffering in silence, being brave enough to say the things that women and men are afraid to say suffering with infertility. 2020 we were scheduled to travel with “Chronicles of an Empty Womb” however Covid cancelled the plans. Blessing in disguise, it opened an opportunity to tell stories in another way.. I created a YouTube documentary channel, that provide women with a space to tell their story and inspire another woman.
SharRon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Since I was a young girl Theatre was apart of my life. I love to entertain people and watch how they emotionally connect to the characters that are in the production. My company is called Becoming Who I am Productions, for short B.W.I Productions. I provide Christian based productions to inspire people of the World to become who they are meant to be.
What sets me apart from others, is my passion to really tell real stories that will give that person a space to be their real authentic self. Starting out as a playwright and then zoning in on being a documentarian, it’s a different space, Instead of telling stories on the stage I now have the opportunity to have others to tell their story of triumph in real time. See their raw emotions of how they over came and moved forward.
My story of infertility is the catalyst of all the things I’m most proud. With writing my stage play “Chronicles of an Empty Womb” we performed at the D.C. Black Theatre festival,, which was my second appearance in the festival, the feedback that was provided from the women who witnessed the play, gave me confirmation that I was on the right track. I am proud of the work that my company is doing in infertility world. Now have a YouTube documentary channel called Chronicles of S[he], which focuses on the stories of triumph of different medical diagnosis. What I want people to know about me is that, I am passionate about inspiring people to move forward in their victories. It was really hard for me to move forward with a diagnosis of unexplained infertility. However, now that I have, no matter what the diagnosis is for that man or woman, I want to encourage to know that you can make it. I will continue to tell stories on the stage and behind the camera. I want people to know that, I am dedicated to inspire them to be who they are meant to be.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson that I had to unlearn and still to this day speak to myself about is feeling like I am not good enough to be in this field. Society makes you feel that once you are a certain age, it’s over. Or if you are not methodically trained in the field you are inadequate. However, applying myself and passion, has shown me that I can make in this field and do well. I just have to speak to myself and encourage myself that I can do this. Every time I apply myself, I surprise myself and do well.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My business had to pivot in 2020. I was in the process of planning a tour for”Chronicles of an Empty Womb” to different cities. However, the presence of Covid detoured the tour. As you know during that time, theatres was closed due to Covid restrictions and we were unable to travel. I was at crossroads because I still had that fire the fire to tell stories. So the pivot was a blessing. It forced me to get behind the camera and film. Chronicles of S[he] was born.
