We recently connected with Sharron Gregg and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sharron, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
lol well that’s easy! Just a few weeks ago! So I was so stressed and tired. Mentally exhausted and physically exhausted. I was selling small works of art and getting worried about the bills. So much so that I was forcing myself to consider getting a job(as if this isn’t one!) I was truly overwhelmed and felt like I was a failure and just wanted to ball up in the fetal position and quit. I took some breaths and cried a little bit and said no.Enough. I got up,reminded myself that this is my calling and my art makes me and other people happy. I resolved it to it is what it is. I’m excited and ready to do what continues to bring me and others joy. Besides, definitely not a quitter!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started painting about three and a half years ago. Painted my dreams and my migraines. As someone who had never drawn or painted before it was odd to me. I’ve also started feeling colors and painting them. Sometimes I feel yellow through out my body and I know that I’m supposed to paint it so I do. My artwork is quite unique in the sense that if you’ve never experienced a migraine headache before, when you see my work, you see the beauty and the pain in it. I’ve met a lot of artists and creators but never anyone who painted their migraines and their dreams! I’m proud that my work touches and reaches so many diverse groups and genres of people! Pain is something we’ve all experienced! And to be able to find the beauty in it is something to behold! I speak with people, potential clients or not and learn about them and sometimes paint pieces that incorporate them into the artwork. Making it a bit more special. I have the most amazing people supporting me in what i do and I love them so much for it!My work is unique, affordable and inspiring.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I received a Breast Cancer Diagnosis and definitely wasn’t expecting it. It was a shock. I was tired of doctors appointments and having to spend all of this money that I didn’t have and was trying to keep positive and keep my emotions in check. I didn’t know if I would be able to paint (or even want to) after surgery. At the time, had a job which I had no benefits and no real support. I decided to quit and take a chance on me. What was going to be worse that what was already happening? Nothing! I quit, trusted God. My family and friends were so supportive and uplifting! Now I get to spread the word about early detection and help people find resources.Tyere are days that I feel horrible but I take the medicine every night and keep going. As it stands, I’m cancer free and four more years of alternating MRI’s and mammograms and bloodwork every 3 months. I can do this!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of this journey is that I am doing something that makes others happy! I’m blessed and grateful that I’ve been able to make a difference and a living doing this. I get to encourage and support the next generation of creatives! The arts are important to me and so many others. What could this world be if we were all more supportive! We’d definitely be happier and nicer! I didn’t start painting until I was 51 years old. I wish that I would have known when I was younger what was possible!! No matter where you see me, I encourage all creatively.
