We recently connected with Sharonda Moss and have shared our conversation below.
Sharonda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
Thanks for selecting me to be apart of this. The first customer that I remember purchasing from my website was, a woman in Pennsylvania. Her name was Tierra she ordered $60 worth of skincare products from me when I first started out. The location was what first caught my attention, but she ordered basically everything! This was someone I’ve never heard of , I couldn’t find her on social media I was completely in shock and amazed that someone wanted to support that much. I literally packaged her order that same day with extra things like hand written note, cute packaging so when she opened it, it was worth her shopping again. I literally still have the video of when i packaged her order over a year ago. Thanks Tierra !
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
For those who may not know I am Sharonda Moss, an upcoming skincare brand creator and entrepreneur from Washington, DC. Growing up it was always a struggle with finding proper skincare that would help with my skin and even dry hair issue. This frustration turned into a passion. I grew an interest in science, & makeup development where I further established the knowledge for creating during my high school years studying Biotech at McKinley Technology one of the few STEM based high schools in my area. At such a young age it really opened my eyes to what I can do in the future. After high school I studied at a university where I later dropped out to push my entrepreneurial lifestyle. Skincare wasn’t the brand or skill that I initially pushed out during that time but after rebranding, and focusing on myself I realized where my happiness was. I took one skilled a twisted it another way. My real joy comes from making people feel good in their own skin I did that with the camera now I want to move toward making a product that helps you feel more confident in your own skin. Which is what my brand KINOFSKIN Cosmetics is based around. An organic skincare brand that provides skin loving products to the whole family with earth friendly products. Helping others see that dry skin is normal and should be catered too.
For a lot of my clients I help with acne , eczema and healthy skin development. Just by using a product 2 times you will notice a difference. I think my products offer a different level of results and effectiveness because of the different ingredients, types of products I sell . Along with my overall background knowledge I think is what sets me apart from others. In addition to being an independently ran business I believe are factors in my success today.
KINOFSKIN Cosmetics is a brand that focuses on 3 things, We are committed to quality, customer satisfaction, and creating a community of healthy skin.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Like most people I still worked my regular shift job, I was a footwear associate at Dicks sporting goods at the time making regular hourly pay, I would just budget monthly sometimes weekly to make sure I had the funds needed to start my business. I sometimes worked two jobs because of Covid so it became heavy on my mental and body at a certain point of overworking but i knew the benefits of starting my own business so I pushed through from selling shoes in the morning to mopping floors at night I did it all. Containers and ingredients get expensive and doing everything on my own I literally had no choice but to figure out how to save and just start.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
“If you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say it at all”
I personally think this is something that I’m currently still unlearning and trying to apply to my professional and personal life. Many times as children were taught to save others feelings , put yourself in the others person shoes and things of that nature, but were never really told how to say things and that’s what makes the difference. Learning how to address uncomfortable situations but properly addressing them can help your mental health, and help build character and show others that you can have opposing opinions and perspectives it’s how you share it is what what’s the difference.
