We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sharon Mckayanguin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sharon, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I took a leap that most people only talk about—I walked away from the stability of a full-time career in Human Resources to pursue something that had always called to me: storytelling. HR gave me structure, security, and a clear path forward, but deep down, I knew my passion lived somewhere else. The idea of starting over in voiceover and TV/film acting was both exciting and terrifying but staying comfortable felt like a bigger risk than stepping into the unknown.
There were moments of doubt, of course. Trading in predictable paychecks for auditions, callbacks, and creative uncertainty wasn’t easy. I had to learn how to trust my talent, invest in myself, and build something from the ground up. Every audition became an opportunity, every “no” a lesson, and every small win a reminder that I was exactly where I needed to be.
What kept me going was purpose. In HR, I supported people behind the scenes—but in voiceover and acting, I became the voice and the face of stories that connect, inspire, and move others. That shift gave my work a new kind of meaning, one that fueled my growth both professionally and personally.
Looking back, taking that risk was one of the most defining decisions of my life. It taught me resilience, courage, and the power of betting on yourself. I didn’t just change careers—I stepped into who I was always meant to be.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a voiceover artist and TV/film actress who took an unconventional path into the entertainment industry. My professional background began in Human Resources, where I spent years developing strong communication skills, emotional intelligence, and a deep understanding of people. While that career provided stability, I always felt a creative pull toward storytelling and performance. Eventually, I made the decision to transition fully into voiceover and acting—turning a passion into a purpose-driven career where I could connect with audiences in a more impactful and expressive way.
Today, I provide a wide range of voiceover services across commercial, e-learning, corporate narration, and character work, along with on-camera performances in TV and film. My work is rooted in authenticity and versatility—I pride myself on being able to adapt my tone and delivery to meet the unique needs of each project. Whether it’s bringing warmth and trust to a brand message, clarity to training materials, or depth to a character, I focus on delivering performances that resonate and leave a lasting impression.
One of the key problems I solve for my clients is helping their message truly connect. In a world where audiences are constantly flooded with content, it’s not just about being heard—it’s about being felt. I help brands, producers, and creatives cut through the noise by delivering voice and on-camera performances that are natural, engaging, and aligned with their vision. My background in HR also gives me an edge in understanding client needs, professionalism, and communication—making me not just a performer, but a reliable creative partner.
What sets me apart is my combination of corporate experience and artistic passion. I bring discipline, timeliness, and a solutions-oriented mindset into every project, while still maintaining the creativity and emotional range needed to bring scripts to life. I’m deeply committed to growth, constantly refining my craft, and staying adaptable in an ever-evolving industry.
What I’m most proud of is having the courage to bet on myself and build a career that aligns with who I truly am. It hasn’t always been easy, but every step has been intentional and rewarding. I want potential clients, collaborators, and supporters to know that when they work with me, they’re getting someone who is not only talented, but dedicated, professional, and genuinely invested in bringing their vision to life.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a voiceover artist is the ability to bring words to life and create a genuine emotional connection with an audience. There’s something powerful about knowing that your voice can inspire, comfort, educate, or even persuade someone—sometimes all within a few seconds. Whether it’s a commercial, narration, or character, you become the bridge between the message and the listener.
Another deeply fulfilling part is the versatility of the craft. As a voiceover artist, you’re not limited to one role—you can be a trusted brand voice one moment and a completely different character the next. That creative freedom keeps the work exciting and allows you to continuously grow, stretch your range, and explore new styles.
It’s also incredibly rewarding to collaborate with clients and creatives from all over the world. Being part of a project bigger than yourself—helping a brand tell its story or supporting a company’s mission—gives a strong sense of purpose. Knowing that your voice contributes to something meaningful makes each project feel impactful.
Finally, there’s a personal reward in building a career based on your passion. Voiceover allows you to combine creativity with entrepreneurship, giving you control over your path while doing what you love. That sense of ownership, growth, and fulfillment is truly unmatched.

Have you ever had to pivot?
One of the most defining pivots in my life came when I made the decision to leave my full-time career in Human Resources and step fully into voiceover and TV/film acting. On paper, it didn’t make sense—I was walking away from stability, a steady income, and a clear professional path into an industry known for uncertainty. But internally, I knew I had outgrown where I was. I wasn’t being challenged creatively, and I felt a strong pull toward something more aligned with who I truly was.
The transition wasn’t instant or easy. There were moments where I questioned everything—especially in the beginning when auditions didn’t always turn into bookings. I had to quickly shift my mindset from employee to entrepreneur, learning how to market myself, build relationships, and stay consistent even when results weren’t immediate. It required discipline, faith, and a willingness to embrace discomfort daily.
What helped me navigate that pivot was leaning into my “why.” I reminded myself that I didn’t leave HR just to try something new—I left to fully step into my purpose. I invested in training, improved my craft, and treated every opportunity, big or small, as a step forward. Slowly but surely, things began to align. I started booking work, gaining confidence, and seeing tangible proof that I had made the right decision.
Looking back, that pivot taught me resilience and self-trust in a way nothing else could. It showed me that growth often requires letting go of what’s safe to pursue what’s meaningful. And now, when I look at the career I’m building, I’m proud not just of the work—but of the courage it took to start over and bet on myself.
