Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sharon Kurtz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sharon, appreciate you joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
I have had many jobs over the last 10 years, and I’ve found positive and negative things I can learn from. I would have to say one of the most important lessons/experiences I had in a job that has helped me as a business owner is learning when I’m feeling burn out, and when to lessen my load, or when I need to take a step back and breathe. I tend to keep working on a project to have it finished and exceed expectations or due to perfectionism and I feel that knowing this about myself, and knowing when I’m working in that mode instead of working with my creativity or in a way that’s mindful. The job I have in mind was a remote interior design job, and while I loved it, they wanted designes churned out quickly, which is not how I enjoy working, fast and getting things done sure, but churning designs out just to get them completed AND making each one unique was taxing on all levels (physically, emotionally, mentall, and spiritually) I couldn’t even create for fun because my mind was on hyper drive wanting to make sure that my work was completed. I vowed after that, and once I started a business that if I ever felt that way I would stop while I was ahead of it because I ended up quitting because it was so taxing.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Yeah sure, my company is a residential interior design/ surface pattern design firm that specializes in sustainability and wellness design. I want to create patterns (for fabrics, wallpaper, home goods etc.) and design for homes that allow people to show their unique selves while also being mindful of their health and the health of the planet. I want to design spaces that people feel happy in and make sure that there is a bright future for everyone.
I got into my industry on a whim. I had learned graphic design all through high school. I was in one of those magnet programs so I could basically go into graphic design right out of highschool knowing what people with associate to bachelor degrees would know. I signed up for my classes and realized that I wanted to work with people, and design space that people could use and thrive in, and it wasn’t until I was in college and learned about sustainability that I KNEW that was what i wanted to focus on no matter if I was working for myself or others. Over time I found that many companies I applied to didn’t think of sustainabilt factors or even wellness factors just the aesthetic and form of the space, but not what it could do on a whole different level and I wanted to create a company that could do that.
I want people to know that I have their best interest at heart. I love to listen to others, and really know what they want before designing a space. I know that sustainability/ eco-friendly and wellness design isn’t necessarily the cheapest, but I have a tiered system to help people from many different price points because I feel it’s important to do what you can with what you have and you’re able to do, not to go out of your way and hurt yourself. To me sustainability is a mindset, and what you can use, and afford, it’s not going to be perfect but it will be what you can do, and over time that can change.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal / mission of my creative journey is first and formost loving what I do. I love being inspired no matter where I am, and finding that inspiration. Creation is more a part of who I am than just something I do. So my mission is to keep doing what I love and what fulfills me and as I do that engage, educate and inspire others around me. I want to have a community where we all uplift each other and grow.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is knowing that I can learn what I don’t know and that there’s always room to expand what I already know and my creative toolset. Even if I may not feel that way in the beginning since new things can be scary, but allowing myself to lean into it. Using creativity to explore and ask questions maybe even subconsious ones, and learning from what I create. Or engaging with others and impacting them in a positive way that makes them happy or more educated in sustainability or something of the like.
