We recently connected with Sharon Hudson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sharon, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The basic idea of my services is to teach children and teenagers the tools they need to feel emotionally balanced, happy, and confident. This idea stems from my very unbalanced life as a teen. In the first year of high school, I lost a friend to suicide. This was the first time I felt deep sadness and I don’t remember having any tools to help me deal with this shocking experience. As my teen years went on I became more anxious and insecure. I was missing love and compassion for myself, but again, I didn’t have anyone to teach me the tools to help me with this low self-esteem. Years later, when I became a middle school teacher, I observed a lot of similar issues in my students. They were struggling with a lack of confidence and emotional distress. I remember thinking to myself, “These kids don’t need therapy. They just need someone to teach them how to gain confidence and how to handle intense emotions so they can live happy and successful lives.” Eventually, I couldn’t ignore my calling. I began life coaching kids. I want my students to feel empowered to take their mental health into their own hands and I want them to feel confident in showing up in this world as their unique selves. I am passionate about helping kids love themselves and shine that love upon the world. Teaching kids to be the change they want to see in the world is the most important action we can take to bring more love and compassion to the planet Earth.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
When I started college, my plan was to be a criminal psychologist. I grew up in Houston, TX, and I observed a lot of crime including people stealing cars, robbing houses, and gun violence. I wanted to know how the human mind works and why some people do the things they do. My journey through undergrad and grad school lead me to become a middle school teacher and that’s where I found my true passion. It wasn’t teaching science; it was teaching and helping middle school kids. I can look back and see that every step along this journey has taught me something and brought me to this amazing destination of life coaching kids.
My brand started as Dream Beautiful Personal Development for Kids and has evolved into Radiate Love for Kids. I have grown and expanded services to many different ages and specific needs throughout these past five years, but my main focus will always be helping kids and teens live their best life. I am most proud of my ability to connect with youth and use my intuition to create specific lessons to meet the needs of each of my students. I have helped kids increase their self-confidence, deal with test anxiety, cope with grief, and so much more. It has been such a great experience to connect with each of my students and teach them things that they never thought of before and watch them create positive habits to last a lifetime.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Soon after I turned 41 years old, I separated from my daughter’s father. It was the most challenging decision I’ve ever made and it lead me to have to make big changes in every aspect of my life. This life change occurred during the second year of my life coaching business journey and I wasn’t making enough salary to live on my own. I was pushed into finding a solution to my problem. Somehow the answer came to me when I found Outschool, which is an online learning platform for kids. I started teaching personal development to groups of kids online and connecting with students from all over the world. This helped me to be able to live on my own and support my daughter. This pivot in my life and business prepared me for the shutdowns during covid. I was already doing a lot of teaching online so it felt natural to bring all my students online. At this time, I am working 100 percent online. This works best for me as a single, homeschooling mom, but eventually, I will start hosting occasional in-person group classes and camps. Life circumstances always work out in the most perfect way and I have faith I will be led in the best direction when it is the right time.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Something I’ve had to unlearn during my business journey is that I have to work hard to be successful. Society has taught us that working hard is vital for a successful business. I found that the harder I work, the less successful I am. I need to be healthy and balanced so that I have the energy to help my clients. If I am working hard and exhausting myself I don’t do my job well.
