Hi Sharon, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump into the story of starting your own firm – what should we know?
I embarked on this journey because I recognized numerous gaps in funding, contracts, jobs, and speaking opportunities for black women and black nonprofits in the United States. Despite the obstacles and challenges imposed on us, black women have the potential to create wealth and provide for their families. I have attended various conferences and events focused on women’s empowerment and leadership, where I observed a lack of representation for black women on stage. The discussions often failed to address the barriers that prevent Black women and other minorities from accessing growth, opportunities, and wealth.
I have personally experienced the frustrating statement, “We could not find any black women to speak at the event,” even though I am educated, qualified, and possess expertise in business and nonprofit leadership. It begs the question: am I invisible to you, despite my credentials? Or are you suggesting that I am overqualified due to my education? Adding insult to injury, I’ve seen individuals with less education and experience than myself and my network of black women being given opportunities. When provided with names of qualified black women, they either fail to reach out or offer excuses for their exclusion.
To address this issue and create opportunities for minorities, including women of color, I decided to be part of the solution. This endeavor also revealed another significant gap in the unregulated coaching industry, particularly concerning race. Many coaches need to gain the necessary knowledge and tools to succeed in their field. While they may excel in their craft, they need help with business, resulting in underpricing and missed income opportunities. We aim to bridge these gaps for black women and minorities through our five “Global Certifications”: Business/Nonprofit Coaching, Nonprofit Development & Management, Inclusion-Diversity-Equity-Equality-Advocacy (IDE2A), M-Power Women’s Leadership & Development, and Entrepreneurship Ministry Coaching.
Starting a business as a black woman comes with inherent obstacles that limit wealth-building opportunities. However, success requires determination and the refusal to accept “no” as an answer. I faced numerous challenges, which led me to seek further education to compete for contracts. I had to change my company’s name to fit the business environment, and certain markets were closed off due to my identity as a black woman assisting non-black business owners. Initially, I needed a supportive network and made costly decisions. Without a mentor or coach, I struggled to grasp effective marketing and technology utilization for business growth.
Nevertheless, I transformed these challenges into my current success. After 15 years, my business is thriving, and I am helping other businesses and nonprofits stay afloat. Fortunately, I found a mentor who provided opportunities and invested in my education. Today, thanks to people who have invested in my company, I give back through a mentorship program.
I advise young and 55 + seasoned professionals to maintain their passion, vision, and personal and professional growth. Seek help and remember that a “no” is just one person’s response—many others are waiting to assist you. Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
One of the most effective strategies for growing our clientele is to focus on understanding the motivations and desires of potential clients, as well as providing tailored solutions to help them achieve their goals.
