We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sharon Baker-Boykin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sharon below.
Sharon, appreciate you joining us today. What’s something crazy on unexpected that’s happened to you or your business
I am the oldest child of my parents. I am a daddy’s girl. However, my father passed on the friday before Father’s Day in 2018. After he died in June, I had deaths in my family in July, August, September, October, November, December and ending with my great aunt’s passing in January, 2019. This was a very hard period in my life. I experienced what happens when people do not have their estate plans in order. In May of 2019, I became the first Probate Court Administrator in DeKalb County, Georgia. Now I was seeing every day what the State of Georgia requires and the process when people die with their estate stuff in order and when they do not have their stuff in order. My sister, Karen, asked me to write a book but do not use the fancy legal terms that lawyers like to use. Most people do not understand those fancy legal terms and will not follow up with questions. So please use common language so that you can help people. I took Karen’s suggestions/orders and wrote a book entitled, ‘Help Me Get My Stuff In Order” and the book is a workbook to have people to review all of their stuff to determine who they would like to receive it when they die. I encourage people to ;use the book before they consult with an attorney to finalize their estate plans.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an attorney licensed in the state of Georgia for 40 years (June 2024). I have an extensive legal and business background. I worked in a private firm in the areas of personal injury and estate planning. I was a Special Assistant Attorney General, an Assistant District Attorney, a part-time Magistrate Court Judge, and a Probate Court Administrator. I worked in state government at the GA Department of Labor as the Unemployment Insurance Tax Chief and the Disability Adjudication Director. I also have a Life Insurance and Property and Casualty Life Insurance license. I am an author of eleven (and counting) books.
With this extensive background, I use the experience and knowledge that I have to help, my clients as a Legal Life Coach. I help them to avoid getting into legal issues and/or to get out of legal issues. Some of those issues that I work with my clients on include: child support enforcement, social security disability, and estate planning matters of Wills, Trusts, Guardianships, Conservatorships, and Power of Attorney. I encourage people to get the necessary legal information first so that they can make the right decisions about their life instead of doing nothing and having to live with the decisions of the laws in your state because you were not proactive.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I have a business system that keeps me in touch with my clients and potential clients. I offer a FREE eBook – “7 Reasons Why Professionals Lose What They Have Worked So Hard in Acquiring” at www.HelpMeGetMyStuffInOrder.com. Everyone loves free stuff. This eBook helps the people to address why getting their stuff in order is important. When people access the FREE eBook, I can stay in contact with them to introduce my books, webinars, and events that they can access. They can also schedule a consultation with me to discuss privately their concerns and gain clarity of the options available to resolve their concerns in a proactive way.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
As stated, I am an attorney of 40 years (as of June, 2024). I have done a lot of things in my legal and business career. I am personally a life-long learner and I love to share what I have learned to others. I am the first attorney in my family. When you are the first one going through the jungle of life, you get scratched and cut going through with no pathway to follow. So I use my knowlege and experience to provide a pathway for others to follow. Whether it is a client or a child who wants to be an attorney, I love to teach and help them on their life paths with my lessons learned.
One of the ways that I help is with my books. Writing a book was a challenge because I had not done it before. I thought it had to be perfect before I got it published. I learned that it did not have to be perfect. Every book on your bookshelf has been updated and improved. A friend of mine told me to put a note in the acknowledgement section of my book that gives permission to readers to communicate with me on suggestions for improvements to the book. If their improvement is use, I will list them as a guest editor in the next edition of the book. This also adds to the sales, because they will tell others that they are listed in my book as a guest editor.
I use my experience as an attorney, when I transitioned to an author, to tell and teach others using a story. My first 3 books is a trilogy of a couple named Denzel and Sharon. Now, I did not say that their last name is Washington – LOL. But people can relate to the different life events of the couple and how their decisions can help the reader in their life issues. Denzel and Sharon discuss buying their first house, getting life insurance, raising children, dealing with their son getting his girlfriend pregnant while he is in high school, dealing with elderly parent issues, and retirement. Each chapter is a different life issue that touches many people.
The transition from the courtroom to my business as a legal life coach and author has been fun and rewarding. I can still use my legal knowledge and experience to write, counsel, coach, and speak at events.
