We recently connected with Sharon Allen and have shared our conversation below.
Sharon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
After working for different spas, I realized that I wanted to be a solo esthetician. It was the freedom to do what I wanted and run the business as I see fit that was enticing. I was fortunate to be surrounded by people that had their own businesses and were a guiding light in creating my LLC, business bank account, and EIN number. I started researching what product lines and booking site I wanted to use. I started as a home based business, but quickly realized I needed to rent a space to provide the luxurious experience I wanted to provide. I have been renting a suite for a little over a year now and many lessons were learned. I always heard “just start! you’ll figure it out as you go!” and you truly do! I learned and am still learning about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to building clientele. There are so many different aspects of building clientele. Everyone has to be on social media nowadays, but it is equally important to build in person relationships and be out in your community. Being surrounded by the right people is crucial. Your NET WORTH is your NETWORK! Currently, I am exploring different networking events and partnering with local businesses. I want to always remain a student – the only way to be for constant growth, professionally and personally.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi! My name is Sharon Allen. I am the Founder of Esthetically You, a modern skincare boutique, dedicated to providing you luxurious beauty services focusing on corrective skincare, intimate waxing, and brows. Located in Buford, GA.
Esthetics is my second act. I went to college for Fashion Merchandising and worked in the fashion industry in NYC. At my last corporate job, we lost someone to breast cancer and it changed my life. It brought on the questions/thoughts of what am I doing with my life? I want to leave my imprint in this world.. My husband received a job offer in Indiana and we ended up relocating. In a way, I was ready to start over. I couldn’t find work and was unemployed for many months. I started exploring going back to school and ended up falling in love with all that esthetics has to offer. After receiving my esthetician license, I worked for a spa where I really set the foundation of who I am as an esthetician. I tried to learn as much as I could while I was there.
We knew Indiana wouldn’t be home forever and when my husband received another job offer here in Georgia, we relocated once again. It’s been almost 4 years living in Georgia and it has been so fulfilling. Since moving here, I’ve had 2 kids and launched my business. A whirlwind for sure! But SO worth it! Let’s just say, we’ll be staying for awhile! I am the most proud of this. Having my family and simultaneously building my business, my brand, my legacy. The hustle looks different with a family and not everyone can relate, but I wouldn’t want to do it any other way.
At Esthetically You, we offer various facials that include the EY Signature Facial, Dermaplane Facial, and the Hydro Diamond Facial, We also offer waxing services, brow lamination, and brow tint. I take pride in being a very thorough professional. I ask detailed questions and provide you with personalized care. I love to get to know my clients, but also respect that it is their relaxation time. Esthetically You is a safe space and welcomes you as you are. If you have a skin concern, whether it be acne, hyperpigmentation, or texture, I can help you reach your goals. I like a progressive approach when treating your skin, making sure we maintain a healthy skin barrier. If you are ready to invest in your skin, I hope you’ll allow me to be your Esthetician.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Honestly, people do not talk about this enough! This is an area where I struggled and am still learning about till this day. I had some savings set aside from when I was working. I also explored credit card options with a 0% APR promotion. Loans aren’t as accessible for new small businesses. It has been a very frustrating process. Gratefully, I’ve recently met some people in finance that are offering guidance.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I believe personal growth is crucial as an entrepreneur. Some podcasts I listen to that support this are Financial Feminist, The Esthetician Podcast, The Esthetician Hub, A Really Good Cry. I also love watching YouTube videos of other estheticians that are inspirational to me, Kristen Marie being one of them! All of these resources motivate me to be better, teach me habits for success, and also help me enhance the vision I have for my future.
