We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sharmine Park a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sharmine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Learning to be a singer in a band and running a language school business are distinct yet equally fulfilling journeys. As a singer, I focus on mastering vocal techniques, stage presence, and harmonizing with fellow musicians. The path to musical excellence demands dedication and continuous practice, as well as a deep connection with the soul of music. On the other hand, owning a language school requires an entrepreneurial spirit, a passion for cultural exchange, and a commitment to helping others bridge linguistic boundaries. Both journeys share the pursuit of mastery, self-expression, and the delight in connecting with audiences or students on a profound level. I’m grateful for both of these opportunities for personal growth and the joy found in pursuing them.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Over a decade ago, I founded English Park, a private ESL (English as a Second Language) school in Torrance. I cherish English Park and I’ve devoted myself to building a community of passionate English learners and exceptional educators. However, I’ve always nurtured another dream—to pursue a singing career in a band. Sharing music and connecting with audiences through songs has been my passion, inspired by my mother’s own time as a singer in a band. While my language school is significant, I aim to strike a balance between both passions. I joined ‘The New Originals,’ an 80’s cover band, a few years ago and have been performing in Orange County and the South Bay area. Clear communication with my staff, students, and bandmates has allowed me to harmonize both worlds. I integrate aspects of my life, introducing song lyrics to ESL students and inviting them to our shows for cultural interaction. It’s fun melding my pursuits, and each enriches the other!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Singing with my band taught me many things such as teamwork and vocal techniques. I aspire to improve my audience interactions and become a true entertainer, despite the cultural and language challenges. As an ambivert, I often find myself between shyness and a desire to entertain those around me. Ironically, I lose some confidence in my mastery of the culture and language needed to be funny and witty on stage. I’m still developing my skills as a lead singer and a frontwoman. I’m eager to excel and prove myself, and to help others do the same. I want to inspire others to pursue multiple dreams with dedication and effort. It’s absolutely possible and will bring you to places you never dreamed of.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Like the rewarding feeling of seeing my students improve, witnessing our band gain more fans and followers is wonderfully gratifying. We strive to deliver outstanding performances and respond to the audience’s preferences, fueled by their energy. This creates an indescribable sensation of joy and unity, making it an addictive and wonderful experience.
