We recently connected with Sharmila Hall and have shared our conversation below.
Sharmila, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?
During my years in sales and sales leadership, I internalized two invaluable lessons: the undeniable power of persistence and the significance of setting clear goals. To me, working in sales wasn’t just about transactions; it was an education in determination and understanding the essence of objectives. In many ways, life mirrors the sales process. Whether we’re presenting a product, attending an interview, or leading a team, we’re continually selling a vision, an idea, or ourselves.
In my early days, I grappled with rejections, setbacks, and many moments of self-doubt. However, instead of succumbing to these challenges, I came to realize that in both sales and life, a closed door isn’t always a rejection. Often, it’s an invitation to reevaluate and adjust our approach. Armed with this insight, I redefined my objectives, devised a structured daily plan, and intensified my outreach efforts. This not only helped me overcome obstacles but also allowed me to foster numerous rewarding professional relationships.
From these experiences, I gleaned that success is rarely instantaneous. The patience and persistence required to secure clients in sales parallel the tenacity needed to build a thriving business. Some objectives, particularly the most rewarding ones, demand both patience and dedication. Now, as a business owner, I draw upon these lessons each day. and remind myself that there’s no summit too high. This ethos doesn’t just guide my business journey; it profoundly shapes my overall outlook on life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My passion for supporting the growth of small and medium-sized businesses has been the cornerstone of my career for over a decade. Through my experiences in marketing, sales, and operational enhancements, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the transformative power of strategic business solutions.
However, I also identified a pressing gap in the market. Numerous businesses were grappling with the challenges of the digital arena, often due to a lack of tailored marketing strategies that resonated with their unique needs. I observed that while larger corporations had vast resources at their disposal, smaller businesses often felt overwhelmed or left behind. This disparity wasn’t just a market observation; it was a call to action.
That’s how SMB Global Marketing was born. Our foundational belief is that every business, irrespective of its size, should have equitable access to robust marketing solutions. We don’t just offer generic strategies; we prioritize customization, understanding that each business has its unique narrative, challenges, and aspirations. By doing so, we aim to level the playing field, ensuring that even the smallest ventures have a fighting chance in today’s competitive digital marketplace.
What sets SMB Global Marketing apart is our unwavering commitment to our clients. We’re not just service providers; we’re partners in growth, dedicated to ensuring that every client achieves their vision of success. Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the most significant testament to my resilience was when I transitioned from Spain to the US to lead our US office at a former company. This move wasn’t just about changing locations; it was a paradigm shift in every sense.
Navigating the US business landscape presented its unique challenges. Everything from workplace culture to hiring practices was different. Keeping employees motivated while ensuring that the business continued to thrive required a delicate balance of familiarity and adaptability. Beyond these operational challenges, there was the task of securing new clients and forging fresh relationships, all while adjusting to an environment starkly different from where I’d grown up.
There were moments of genuine difficulty. Times when the weight of responsibilities and the dissonance of unfamiliarity threatened to overwhelm. But in those moments, I drew from a deep reservoir of determination. I was driven not just by the immediate goal of business success but by a broader vision of proving my mettle in an unfamiliar terrain.
Looking back, I take immense pride in those accomplishments. While that chapter of my life was distinct from my current journey, the lessons I learned and the resilience I showcased laid a robust foundation for where I am today and charted the course for where I’ll be tomorrow.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Over the years, my management and entrepreneurial mindset have been shaped by a diverse range of sources, each contributing a unique perspective to my approach.
One of the foundational books that deeply resonated with me is “The Art of Selling Through Relationships.” This book reaffirmed my belief that genuine connections and relationships underpin any successful business transaction. It’s not just about a sales pitch; it’s about understanding, trust, and mutual benefit.
I’m also an ardent follower of Harvard Business Review’s writings, especially “HBR’s On Managing People.” The insights from this collection have been instrumental in refining my people management skills. It underscores the point that every individual is unique, and adaptive leadership is the key to unlocking their potential.
Financial acumen, to me, goes beyond just numbers. The “Minority Mindset” has provided a refreshing take on finance and business, advocating for a mindset shift rather than just tactical changes. And then there’s Robert Kiyosaki, whose work has profoundly shaped my understanding of money, assets, and the entrepreneurial spirit. His teachings, particularly from “Rich Dad Poor Dad,” instilled in me the value of financial literacy and the potential of passive income streams.
A significant influence in my entrepreneurial journey also comes from a personal space: my parents, who were entrepreneurs themselves. Their resilience, vision, and work ethic have been my guiding stars, teaching me that entrepreneurship is as much about character as it is about business acumen.
I firmly believe that learning is an ongoing journey. The world of business is ever-evolving, and staying updated is not just an advantage; it’s a necessity. I make it a point to continuously read, learn, and absorb as much information as possible. As with any journey, the learning never stops.
