Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sharlyne Carla Rogers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sharlyne Carla, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
I am the proud owner of Spirit of Excellence Writing & Editing Services, LLC! It was very easy for me to come up with this name because I am extremely detail-oriented and love to see everything that I am connected to executed properly. To me, having a spirit of excellence means that you care about what you do and whom you serve – you create a fulfilling experience for your clients. I take pride in delivering quality products and services on a consistent basis. As a faith-based business, I work as unto the Lord by demonstrating integrity, patience, and equity. I was also inspired by the story of Daniel in the Bible since he was described as having an excellent spirit.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an award-winning author, inspirational speaker, and professional editor with an MBA in Management and a Woman and Minority Business Certification from the State of Florida. After being trained as a prayer warrior and intercessor since 2003, God commissioned me to write my first book titled “When Heaven Hears Your Prayer” in 2007. I began proofreading books for other authors in 2008, launched Spirit of Excellence Writing & Editing Services, LLC in 2014, and officially became self-employed in 2015. I have written a total of seven faith-based books thus far.
As a single-member limited liability company, I update resumes, edit diverse books, and proofread various content for both individuals and businesses. I will be offering a new service by the end of the year to help first-time authors navigate the entire book writing process from conception through publishing. Many writers have reached out to me for publishing assistance over the years, so one-on-one coaching will also be an option for those who need a more hands-on learning experience.
What sets me apart from most business owners is that I don’t see anyone as my competition. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and gaining wisdom from others because I want everyone to win. I am most proud of the fact that the best source of new clients for me is referrals. I pride myself on being more than just a service provider because I genuinely care about my clients, followers, and subscribers. What I want people to know about my brand is that in everything I do – whether I’m writing a book, consulting with a client, or creating a video – my main goal is to uplift, support, and strengthen someone else.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My resilience is illustrated by how I finally embraced my true talents. In 2007, I was laid off from my comfy, familiar office job as a quality assurance analyst for a mortgage company. By this time, I was 34 years old with a bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies and 10 years of experience in the financial services industry. I looked for a new lending role for 8 months with no prospects. I had a natural gift of writing and proofreading since I was a child, but I never considered that as a career choice. God then told me that it was the gifts He had put in me that were going to be my provision, so I began to apply for positions in the field of writing. I was able to get a job as a resume writer in 2008, and the book that I never planned nor desired to publish served as the writing sample that company required. If I had not been obedient to write that book in the same year I lost my job, I would have missed my opportunity to begin my journey to entrepreneurship.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The most significant lesson I’ve had to unlearn is the lie I told myself about my own worth. It took me several years to realize my personal value and raise my business prices over time to match industry standards and the increasing cost of living. I also needed a mindset shift regarding wealth. I thought that if I had a surplus of at least one dollar at the end of every month, I was doing well. I never thought that the fear of success was a real or common issue until I assessed my own self-sabotaging behaviors such as procrastination and perfectionism. I pretended that rushing to get things done right before a deadline was simply self-motivation or an energy boost. I have only been able to change my mindset because I have invested in myself by participating in life-changing webinars, in-person events, and online groups consisting of professionals who have already reached the levels of success that I aspire to.
