We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sharice Pegram. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sharice below.
Sharice, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Your ability to build a team is often a key determinant of your success as a business owner and so we’d love to get a conversation going with successful entrepreneurs like yourself around what your recruiting process was like -especially early on. How did you build your team?
My business did not have employees from day one, I started out alone. My dream was always to have my own brokerage with top producing agents who genuinely loved the real estate business and not just the money. It took seven years before I started recruiting for agents and 1 year later I hired my first agent. It was a long process finding the right person. I posted ads on Indeed, had countless interviews and then said maybe this isn’t the right time. It was right after Covid so I figured maybe I’d put the recruitment process on hold. Then I started posting for interns and that’s when I found the perfect person who would later become my first agent. If I were starting my business today I most definitely would not wait 7 years before recruiting, I’d probably start after a year or two of being an independent broker.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was raised in the Bronx as the only child. As a child, I had aspirations of being a Lawyer. Never in a million years did I think I’d stumble into the real estate industry, but you can’t always predict where or when you’ll discover what you’re meant to do in life.
I was taught at a young age that if you want something in life, you have to work hard for it. So that’s what I did.
Prior to and during my real estate career, I worked at for the City of New York where my positions became increasingly demanding. I got into the real estate industry 14 years ago when unbeknownst to me the housing market was about to crash.
That didn’t stop me, I helped families navigate through short sales and foreclosures and took that time to learn the real meat and bones of the real estate industry. I became a broker in 2013.
As my career advanced, I found my stride working with First Time Homebuyers throughout The Bronx and lower Hudson Valley region. I am an expert in negotiations, home staging and marketing.
I aim to provide the highest level of service to my clients and take deep pride in helping them achieve their real estate goals. I’m currently expanding and looking for the right agents to join my brokerage.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Yes, The E Myth Revisted has definitely impacted my entrepreneurial thinking. This book made me realize that I need to have systems in place in order to be successful. One of my favorite quotes from the book is you have to be slow to hire and quick to fire.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me is word of mouth and social media. Referrals were my main source of new clients until 2017 and starting in 2020 social media became another great source. I take pride in the fact that prior to Covid I was able to make a living through referrals.
