We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shari Teigman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shari below.
Shari , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with a fun one – what’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
As a mentor with almost 10 years in the personal development and entrepreneurial space, people are shocked to learn I don’t believe in the whole ‘positive vibes’ philosophy.
To me, the more we try to bypass our feelings, beliefs and struggles for the sake of faking it til you make it, the further away you are from overcoming your obstacles and finding out what real success and fulfillment can look like for you.
The key creating lasting and personal change for yourself- not just trying to hack or model yourself after someone else’s growth is to honor all you are- the parts that feel weak, the things you feel shame or grief about and to face not only the shiny happy highlight parts of yourself. If you don’t embrace honesty and vulnerability as you work on our own growth, you truly limit your capacity to actually grow!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
After a tumultuous life change as young mom of 2 boys going through a challenging divorce, I restarted my life with a bng. The issue was, after the adrenaline of surviving that time wore off, I didn’t know who I wanted to be. I spent so many years leaving what I knew I didn’t want for my life, as I looked ahead, all I could see what darkness. It was a blank slate without the excitement for starting over.
I began to explore and read, first honestly to escape the silence of my own very loud mind, and fell down the rabbit hole of personal development. It blew my mind that we could be in control of our thoughts and create the life we want by healing and learning. I hired a coach and realized this field was waiting for me my whole life. 11 years ago, I trained as coach and did a year long yoga teacher training all at once- I am definitely an all or nothing person! I decided to face myself both body and mind to emerge the best person to support others, I wanted to be a lighthouse for those who felt lost, misunderstood and alone as I had.
Almost 10 years ago, I started my business and couldn’t understand why it didn’t take off like I had hoped. I did all of the ‘right’ things, made a pretty website with all of the coach words and yet I wasn’t bringing in new business. It was then I realized I had done the SAME thing I had done in my life- become a Stepford version of who I thought I was supposed to be.
That was the day my idea of being a Maverick was born. I decided I was going to be fully me and unleash my unique ways and thoughts on the world- I was either going to be fully me or not do this at all.
I now do this exact work with my clients, who I like to call the non-Average Joes and Janes of the world. I help people find their Maverick Edge in life and business- to stand out with their strengths and their quirks and embody themselves fully without needing permission.
From start ups to big business, from stay at home moms to retirees looking to find themselves, I adore using a mix of intuition, tough love and a splash of magic to get into the hearts and minds of people wanting to step more fully into their lives and take the reins back.
I work 1:1 with clients, run group trainings and speak on stages internationally and hope to have my first book out (I have 7 in my head!) in 2024 for my 10 year business anniversary.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Because my values are curiosity, connection and freedom, I don’t look at audience building or growth from a marketing perspective (much to the chagrin of many marketer friends of mine!)
To me, it’s about love. Loving your people enough to reach out. Creating content that feels like a love note. Following up because you actually care not because there’s always an invoice being sent after the outreach.
Could I have grown faster if I was more strategic about relationships? 1000% yes but that’s not the mission I am on.
When my name gets mentioned, I always want it to be because I made someone feel better or I helped create change- that to me is real success.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I am a master overgiver and a recovering people pleaser. I used to think if I just gave and gave people would flock and buy from me and boy was I wrong!
I had to learn to put boundaries on my time and energy which I really struggled with and I needed to see myself as an expert rather than everyone’s best friend.
Ironically, the more I shifted into that, the closer I became with my right fit clients and deeper the transformations became because I was valuing myself more which translated into my audiencing valuing me more too!
More time isn’t always what everyone needs- you have to allow people their own journey and be the help along the way.
