We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shari Davidson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shari below.
Alright, Shari thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
During the pandemic, I took the risk and started my own lipgloss and lip care company titled: Glossdate. Slogan, a date with lipgloss! I was bored at home during the pandemic and stumbled across a video on how to make lipgloss and from there that’s when my business started. In January 2021, that’s when I launched glossdate, it’s been a slow start, but I currently sell my lipglosses out of a salon in Brooklyn, NY entitled Celebrity Styles.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I take pride in my lipgloss/lip care company my products are hand made and vegan and actually work! The main reason I started the company is because I noticed my son’s lips were becoming too dry and came up with a hand made all natural lip scrub. After one use, his lips went from being dry to smooth and soft. So I decided to share with others. At the time, I introduced my brand to family and friends and eventually started an instagram page to get my brand out there.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
After initial success amongst friends and family, the buzz around glossdate died down. So in order for me to gain new business I put myself out there and started making glosses for different events: bridal party, baby shower and kid’s birthday party. Then the opportunity came around for me to have my products sold out of a local salon in Brooklyn. The salon name: Celebrity Styles located at 3803 church avenue brooklyn NY 11203.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn is that just because something is great, doesn’t mean success will happen overnight . I have now come to realize that owning your own business is not a sprint, but a marathon. I thought because my products actually produce and are handmade would make me achieve success, but I realize when it comes to business is more so of putting your name and brand out there. I’m thankful to all my loyal customers that still rep and support my brand.
