We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shari Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Shari thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
If I could go back in time, I would’ve started my creative career much sooner! When I was first signed to TTP, it was December 2020, and my first book dropped in January 2021. At the time, I was in the military, so my focus was always the mission. In my spare time, I was still writing stories because I had been writing since I was a child, and it was a fun hobby for me. Truthfully, I doubted my talent a lot, and that was the only reason I never submitted a manuscript. My best friend gave me the push of courage I needed to finally go for it, and now here I am.

Shari, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Shari B, and I write urban fiction romance with a splash of street lit. I started writing stories when I was 7 years old, and as I moved into my teen years, I kept up with it. Writing for me was an escape from my home life, which was horrible at the time, so I used writing to put myself in a perfect world that didn’t exist. I’m most proud of the fact that I put a little of my real life in every book that I’ve written so far. I feel that using real life plots or characters can help the readers connect more to the story. Everyone wants to see a piece of them in something they’re reading or watching, and that’s what I aim to do with my books. Writing isn’t just a career for me, it’s a true passion, and I think that reflects in every page.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is connecting with the readers. Honestly, the ones that have been around from the first few books start to feel like family. I love getting their feedback and reading their reviews on Amazon. It truly helps me for the next book. Constructive criticism is everything to me!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m currently experiencing a pivot in my career right now. I started growing closer to God so He’s having me pivot from urban fiction and likely more into a Christian fiction/romance lane. As scary as it is to go away from everything that got my career started, I’m excited to see what happens next.
