We recently connected with Sharde Richardson and have shared our conversation below.
Sharde, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Quality control is a challenge almost every entrepreneur has had to focus on when growing – any advice, stories or insight around how to best ensure quality is maintained as your business scales?
Let’s dive into this interesting topic! You know, my portrait business has seen some changes over the years. Not so much in terms of fancy new locations, but definitely in terms of the demand for what I do. And at the heart of it all, maintaining top-notch quality has been my guiding principle.
So, when I decided to offer my clients a more luxurious experience, I had to make some thoughtful choices. One of the big decisions was putting together an incredible team. I handpicked some seriously talented massage therapists, makeup artists, and hair stylists who share my passion for excellence. Together, we’re on a mission to make every client feel like a VIP! Importantly, this dream team ensures that no matter which session a client books, the artistic vision and quality remain consistently outstanding.
Now, let’s talk numbers. You see, some photographers go all out, booking clients left and right. But I’ve learned that for my own well-being (and to stay creative), sometimes less is more. I truly love what I do, and I want to personally lead every client session. So, no associate photographers here. I’ve limited the number of luxe portrait sessions I offer to just three per month. This keeps the creative juices flowing, prevents burnout, and gives clients all the time they need with me before their session day.
But the quality game doesn’t end there. I send out comprehensive session guides to my clients to ensure everything is clear for their big day. Communication with my team is key – we love using visual mood boards and written notes to keep things crystal clear. And let’s not forget setting reasonable gallery and product turnaround times – no rush jobs allowed!
Now, picture this: during a client shoot, a team member had an unexpected absence. That’s where the style mood board swooped in as our lifesaver. Even with a little hiccup, we seamlessly maintained the quality and consistency of the client’s attire. It’s moments like these that remind me how vital it is to have solid quality controls in place.
So, here’s my advice for those concerned about quality control as they grow: Stick to your company’s core values and artistic vision. Build a team that’s not only skilled but also shares your passion and dedication. Invest in clear guidelines, and don’t be afraid to tweak things along the way. Remember, quality control isn’t just about protecting your brand’s reputation; it’s about consistently delivering exceptional experiences to your clients, and that’s what drives your growth.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey into the world of photography began during my high school days. It was a photography course with a patient teacher that ignited my passion. Back then, we worked with film cameras and processed our images in a darkroom. The entire process, from exposing the image onto paper using a projector to the chemical development, fascinated me deeply. While I’ve transitioned to digital photography, I still apply the technical skills I acquired during those formative years.
In 2015, equipped with the skills I honed in high school, I took a leap and booked my first client. From that moment, my career as a portrait photographer took off. Over the years, I’ve continuously expanded my skillset and had the privilege of creating beautiful portraiture for some truly amazing clients.
Has it been a smooth journey? Well, it’s been a captivating adventure filled with learning experiences. Like many small business owners, I’ve faced challenges in marketing and SEO – areas that often feel as complex as learning a new language. The demands of wearing multiple hats and managing time have been constant companions. However, these challenges have only strengthened my determination to elevate my business.
Fast forward to the present, and I’m a luxury portrait photographer, specializing in capturing the beauty of women and couples. My signature style is recognized for its stunning imagery and exquisite use of light. What truly sets me apart is my unwavering attention to detail and my commitment to immersing myself in each client’s unique vision.
I offer a concierge approach to portraiture, where I aim to make my clients feel like celebrities for a day. This involves not only creating visually striking portraits but also crafting an unforgettable experience. From designing perfect lighting to coordinating every element of the photoshoot, including hair, makeup, wardrobe, and even massage, I strive to capture the essence of my clients in the most creative and elegant way possible.
What makes me most proud is the ability to give my clients an experience that goes beyond beautiful photographs. It’s about empowering them to celebrate their unique beauty and style, to express themselves, and to create lasting memories. My portraits are more than just pictures; they are a reflection of my clients’ personalities and stories.
For those considering working with me, I want you to know that my brand is built on a foundation of excellence, creativity, and personalized care. When you choose my services, you’re not just getting photographs; you’re getting an experience that celebrates you. Whether you’re looking to capture your essence, celebrate your uniqueness, or simply create lasting memories, I’m here to make that happen.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Let me take you back to the rollercoaster of 2020, a year that challenged all of us in unimaginable ways.
The world came to a standstill due to the pandemic, and the photography industry was hit hard. Suddenly, accepting clients and conducting photoshoots became nearly impossible with lockdowns and safety concerns. I was trying out a new business model and them suddenly it felt like I was dealt a wild card in a high-stakes game.
But here’s where the pivot comes in. Instead of letting uncertainty consume me, I decided to transform adversity into opportunity. I thought, “What can I do to not only keep my passion alive but also be of help to others facing similar challenges?”
So, I started offering lighting consultations online and editing sessions for fellow photographers. It was a pivot I hadn’t anticipated, but it turned out to be an incredibly rewarding one. I shared my knowledge, honed my teaching skills, and help aspiring photographers eager to learn and grow.
It wasn’t just about surviving; it was about thriving despite the odds. And you know what? It worked! Those online offerings not only helped me stay connected with my love for photography but also empowered others to enhance their skills during a time when the world seemed uncertain.
It’s a reminder that sometimes, life throws curveballs, and you have to pivot. But if you embrace change with creativity and a willingness to adapt, you might just discover new opportunities and make a positive impact you never imagined.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
You know what’s been a game-changer in growing my clientele? It’s like this fantastic cycle of word-of-mouth referrals and building genuine client connections.
When my clients have a blast during their luxury portrait sessions and absolutely love the final results, they can’t help but sing my praises. They become my biggest cheerleaders and start telling everyone – friends, family, co-workers – about their awesome experience. It’s like a domino effect of referrals that just keeps rolling.
And let me tell you, there’s something magical about this. When new clients come in through referrals, they already have a sense of trust and excitement because they’ve heard glowing reviews. It’s like we’re all part of this big, happy, and trusted network of portrait aficionados who appreciate the artistry and dedication I pour into every session.
But here’s the kicker – it’s not just about creating stunning images. It’s about giving each client a personalized and unforgettable experience. From our very first chat to the moment they hold their portraits, I want them to feel like the VIPs they are. It’s all about making sure they know they’re valued, heard, and involved every step of the way.
This dedication to top-notch service isn’t just a one-time thing; it’s a commitment. And guess what? It’s turned many of my clients into true ambassadors for my brand. They’re not just clients anymore; they’re like my fan club, spreading the love and making this whole journey incredibly rewarding.
So, in a nutshell, it’s all about happy clients sharing their stories, trust, and a whole lot of passion for creating beautiful portraits that’s been the secret sauce to growing my awesome clientele.
