We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sharana Horton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sharana, thanks for joining us today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
With the explosion of technology and fashion these days, the new generation is changing the way we dress. The way we shop has changed significantly in recent years because with increasing knowledge of art and fashion, it’s not just a monopoly of a few giant companies. People have changed their perception to a great level and instead of sticking to a few brands, they are looking to explore and try new things without focusing just on the tag.
People are thrifting now more than ever. The boom in technology and fashion is changing the way we dress. With increasing knowledge of art and fashion, people have changed their views on fast fashion and leaned more towards thrift shopping. It’s economically friendly, the clothes are more quality, and they’re inexpensive! I get it and it feels good to see more people thrifting. However, if everyone starts thrifting, will there be a need for my business?
Sharana, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Catch Our Thrift, LLC. is an online resale shop that sells curated vintage and thrifted clothing. Most of our pieces are considered authentic vintage, created in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Catch Our Thrift is one of a kind, eclectic, funky, idiosyncratic clothing you never knew you wanted, but your closet definitely needs. Bold, “stop and stare” staple pieces are our specialty. Our business is also environmentally friendly.
I’ve noticed a lot more vintage resellers and thrifters popping up now more than ever and I love that people are becoming aware, but what sets us a part from others is our genuine love for thrifting. This isn’t just a quick buck for us. It’s a family business. What drew me to my husband was our shared love for thrifting and vintage styles. I thrift for my kids’ clothes and interior design pieces for our home. This is a lifestyle. We do this!
This ride hasn’t been easy. I’ve stopped and started so many times, I’ve lost count! Mostly because life happens. My husband and I have had 4 kids in the past 6 years. We’ve both lost parents in the last 4 years so it’s been a journey. Often times, I would get discouraged because sales were slow or social media posts weren’t getting a lot of traction. No matter how many times I’ve put this business down to focus on life, God always brings me back. There’s something big here. I know it. I feel it. I’m not passing it up anymore. I’m getting what’s mine.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
My love for thrifting came from being a broke college student who loved vintage fashion and retro style. I’ve always had a unique fashion sense. When I was in college at Savannah State, I didn’t have the funds to go to the mall and ball out, so I started thrifting. The gems I would find in the thrift stores were unbelievable. I loved it. I got a rush from going in a Goodwill with 20 dollars and seeing how many dope pieces I could find. Well, while at SSU during my senior year, I met my husband. As we were getting to know each other, I found out he shared that same love for thrifting as me (which was odd because I didn’t know a lot of guys who thrifted back then). He took me on a thrifting date to Goodwill, and it was love at first pair of vintage Levi jeans. He was literally the male version of me. We shared the same style, love for old music, and classic trends.
When I first started my business in 2014, I had just graduated college and I was so eager to take over the world! I threw all my time and the little money I had into Catch Her Thrift. I was consistent with posting and I even had a blog where I would showcase the pieces I would sell. When I finally made my first sale, it was so hype! At that moment, I knew I could really turn this hustle into something big. Well, the whole time I was building an empire for women’s clothes, men would ask me if I sold men’s clothes. I didn’t know much about thrifting for men, but my husband did because he thrifted clothes for himself all the time. So I bought him on the team, changed ‘Catch Her Thrift’ to ‘Catch Our Thrift’ and the rest is history.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Before I got married and started having kids, I put my entire life in Catch Our Thrift. When I got married and started having babies, it definitely slowed me down. My priorities pivoted and I didn’t make time for the business. Years passed by and I just decided that I want to start the shop back up again. We re-branded, changed the name and the logo, added a men’s line, and made more time to work on our business. There are so many other avenues we want take with Catch Our Thrift. So we may re-brand again and take it to the next level.
