We recently connected with Sharael Kolberg and have shared our conversation below.
Sharael , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I am an adventure travel writer and am not afraid of taking risks. However, in the past year, I’ve had a few incidences that have made me rethink the risks versus rewards of adventure travel and how I prepare for such expeditions. I broke my tibial plateau (leg) skiing in remote British Columbia and was supposed to be on the Titan that imploded. I used to “just go” and not think about any negative outcome. These days, I vet the tour operators, ask where the closest hospital is, inquire about safety procedures, know where the nearest exit is, etc. I encourage people to be adventurous, but also be prepared for a worst case scenario.

Sharael , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an internationally published travel writer with more than 20 years of experience. I cover travel topics like adventure, wellness, luxury, sustainability and winter sports. My articles have appeared in Travel + Leisure, U.S. News & World Report, Fodor’s, Lonely Planet, Robb Report, Forbes, Thrillist, Mercury News, Westways, Sunset, Outside and more. You can see some of my clips at Sharael.com.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As a full-time travel writer, the best thing is being able to travel the world. I am passionate about seeing new places, meeting new people, having new thrilling experiences. But the most rewarding aspect of the job is sharing those experiences with my readers, informing them about how they can have the same experience, inspiring them to get out and see the world, and helping them learn how to stay safe while doing so.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Travel isn’t always easy. But the times that I had to struggle and the experiences that I remember the most fondly. If life was easy, it would be boring. Travel makes us get outside of our comfort zone, which is how we grow. I’ve slept in sub-zero temps in Patagonia where we only had cold showers, but it created a bond between those of us on the trip.
