We recently connected with Shaquil Timmons and have shared our conversation below.
Shaquil, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I want my legacy to be that of a hard working family man. My business is centered around celebrations for families. My clients call me when they want to celebrate milestones with their loved ones. I’m there for the most important times in their lives. Whether it be weddings, birthday parties, anniversaries, business openings, you name it and I’m there. When they look back on the big moments in their lives, I will be a part of that memory.
Shaquil, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started deejaying at the age of 12. I’ve always been a big lover of music and I received a pair of turntables for Christmas that year. I never looked back. I help my clients and their guest have a good time. I have a very extensive knowledge of music. I can play the hottest songs out now and also classic music that you forgot about but still love. My job is all about creating a feel good atmosphere and taking everyone on a musical journey. When you hire me, you get a masterclass in taste and good energy.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to be diverse. One day I can be playing for a group of 13 year olds and another day a birthday party for someone who just turned 70. I’ve played for large African American crowds, mixed crowds, white crowds, it doesn’t matter. Give me an audience no matter what race or age and I’ll guarantee that I’ll play the music they love.
I am most proud of my ability to put smiles on faces during important moments in peoples lives. I am one of the first people you call when you want to celebrate a huge milestone. Over the years, I end up becoming a part of all of my clients families. I’m present when important things are recognized and celebrated.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Word of mouth is the biggest driver for my business. Nothing compares to it. My clients love to brag about me and introduce me to their friends and family. I’ve run social media campaigns, printed business cards, put out promotional mixes and a lot of other marketing campaigns but nothing compares to word of mouth. I also post every gig that I do and use hashtags. Hashtags on Instagram helped me meet a lot of new clients who never heard of me before. It’s the second biggest draw for me next to word of mouth
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of my business is seeing the smiles on faces when I’m at events. I love to see everyone having a good time. I also love to play a song that people forgot about and to get a good reaction from the crowd. A good DJ plays a few song that you aren’t expecting to hear. People put a lot of time and money into their celebrations and I love to help them feel that it was all worth it.
