We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shaquan Coburn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shaquan, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
“Taking risks” is just part of life to get you where you need to go. I learn that in life / and a creative. Every risks isn’t going to be successful and that is okay, as long as you took that step. You learn in every risk you take , and without them you would not be where you are!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to tell the readers what are those problems you face in the market or industry?
1. I got into Film + Design by being curious, in design I wanted to try it myself and see why the prices on some items are so expensive, what fabrics work with each other. In Film I wanted to create my own photoshoots, wanted my photos to become grainy and vintage so you can think of a time when you seen my pictures.
2. It is many problems behind the scenes, in photography you got film running out, pictures not coming out how you want them too. In Design I make 1of1 pieces which consists of cut and sew garments. Sometimes fabric runs out , sewing machines messes up or I just simply cut out a pattern wrong.
3. I think what sets me apart is my persistence. I take many Ls and get right back on my feet. Nothing can stop me from reaching my goals.
4. I want people to know me more than just my work. I want to be remembered by someone who inspired many people who are just like me, from a small town, also how I treated people, “A man strength is his character”. Of course your work will never die but my soul will be here forever.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is giving people their pictures or pieces back. I love bringing a smile on other faces but something I created, Many times they don’t know but it keeps me going on this path. I love when they tag me or I see someone where my clothes outside, that is the biggest reward of them all.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes , some resources I wish I had earlier was just how to find your mentors. I also thought I had to find people online I can text or hit up to help me with this journey, but no my mentors are the ones who always been there for me. They check on me without wanting anything back, and they simply want the best for me in life. You can’t search for something like that. It comes to you naturally.
