We were lucky to catch up with Shanti Thompson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shanti, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The moment I realized I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally came after I sold my first design at 17. My love for art began at 13, starting with drawing Hello Kitty on my nails and creating signs for local farmers’ stands. But it was only when I earned my first $70 for a logo I designed in Inkscape that it truly clicked—I could make a living from this. From that point on, I explored various avenues to monetize my art, and nail art emerged as my true passion. Not only could I express my creativity for a living, but I’d also always have beautifully done nails.

Shanti, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always been drawn to art, and that’s where my journey into the world of nails began. As a child, I had a habit of biting my nails, which often left me with sore and bleeding cuticles. Tired of the discomfort, I started wearing press-on nails in 3rd or 4th grade, initially as a fun birthday gift. By middle school, I discovered nail art videos on YouTube, and they opened up a whole new world for me. Every Friday, I’d apply a layer of nail strengthener, determined to grow my nails long enough to create the designs I was absorbing online.
This led me down the path of acrylic nails, and eventually, I grew my natural nails over 2-3 inches with an acrylic overlay. Today, I specialize in gel services and press-on nails, offering gel extensions, overlays, and intricate nail art. I’m passionate about helping my clients grow out their natural nails and providing a healthier alternative to acrylics.
What truly sets me apart is my level of nail artistry. Recently, I’ve been particularly enjoying creating 3D flowers and detailed designs. If I had to choose one thing to be known for, it would be my nail art.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to wear my art. Making something and having it sit in a folder on the computer is ok. But being able to feel and see it. Makes it feel real.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I feel society can stop trying to underpay artist. A big reason why I’m switching to an online business with press ons is due to being told several times that prices are too high, but they’re requesting Instagram nails. It’s very stressful when people do not value your work, but still approach you for said work.
