We were lucky to catch up with Shanti recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shanti , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
My first job was giving classes in a nutritional club where I was not paid. It was voluntary. There I began my first teachings that gave me the guidelines to improve and move forward.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
After a very painful divorce and a detox process of anxiolytics and antidepressants I began to practice Yoga again. I had already practiced years ago, but not with the discipline that the practice deserves. At that time, invaded with so many symptoms by the detox and so much emotional pain I did two daily classes to alleviate what I felt, and my surprise was that I truly felt, after several years that I was advancing. I began to feel calmer every day, my creativity increased, my perspective on life was changing and joy accompanied me all the time, even in vulnerable moments. So I decided to become certified as an instructor, and reikista. Years before I had certified life coach too, so I created a method combining reiki, aromatherapy, empowering phrases and deep relaxation which I apply in the last posture, Savasana , which is what makes the difference of my teaching.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During all these years, almost 10 since that divorce and detox, I had to acquire tools that would allow me to keep myself without giving up. Definitely, re-educating my mind was fundamental to focus on what I should and not on what I did not have.
Another factor that helped me was putting together a routine where I stayed in connection with what I wanted to achieve. For this I began to include meditation cada mañana, I learned about mindfulness, I listened and I still do, podcast, interviews, documentaries where they explained everything about the mind, emotions and how to manage them.
In addition, whenever I did not feel strong, I resorted to therapy, where I received other tools that I could use in moments of wanting to abandon everything.
By bringing my attention to the positive, I avoided complaining and keeping joy burning as an engine of well-being.
That’s how I overcame the pain and became resilient in the process.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I would say that a very important factor in this field is discipline. We can have the knowledge and be trained to impart the knowledge and follow the practice, but without discipline, the results will not be the most effective.
Discipline is what really moves you forward and realizes the impact that what you do has.
If you are not constant and disciplined, you will hardly be able to advance and acquire the skills required by these practices such as yoga and meditation.
