We were lucky to catch up with Shante Clark-Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shante, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I initially wanted to work for a private practice as a 1099 contractor and provide services as a prn (as needed) therapist at a behavioral health hospital. Private Practice allowed me to help clients and maintain a flexible schedule. This was great, I was able to provide services and not be concerned about administrative aspects.
However, once I became fully licensed, I realized with a background in Healthcare Administration and Library Science, I possess a natural skill set for administration and organization. This led me to research the steps needed to establish a Professional Limited Liability Corporation (PLLC).
Ensuring that I addressed every necessary area needed to establish the practice was the key challenge. I had a checklist of items I needed and adhered strictly to them. Working and volunteering within various facets of mental health from agency to private practice allowed me to understand what I needed to have professionally to establish a successful practice. I was able to ensure that I utilize professionalism, beginning with client intake through service completion.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
When client’s schedule a session it’s a true honor. With this first step, a client is essentially making a choice to allow me to help them work toward their therapeutic goals. Being an open, authentic, empathetic and open minded therapist, I want to ensure that my clients understand that they are valued. When a client selects a therapist, they must identify a therapist they feel will help them accomplish their therapeutic goals and be a good fit. Therefore, when new clients schedule a session. I’m truly grateful.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Marketing on social media, credentialing with Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) and networking with various Psychiatrist, their Nurse Practitioners and various therapist has been an effective strategy for growing clientele. Maintaining effective communication, flexibility, and continuity of care encourages clientele to remain in therapy.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could go back, I would absolutely choose the same profession. I enjoy mental health and wellness. I’m thankful everyday. I have the responsibility of encouraging and helping individuals.
