We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shantal Garcia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shantal, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
My first job in the beauty field was as a makeup artist at a Macys beauty counter and also a part-time receptionist, a luxury hotel spa. Honestly, I almost didn’t go to the Spa interview because I wasn’t sure I’d fit in, but I ended up connecting really well with the spa manager. She gave me my first opportunity in the aesthetics industry, and working in that environment inspired me to pursue this career of mine as an Esthetician. I am forever grateful for her for opening the door for me in the aesthetics industry.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started in the beauty industry over 10 years ago as a make up artist at a Macy’s makeup counter. Later, started working in a luxury hotel spa, I discovered the role of an Esthetician and realize I wanted to help people improve peoples skin for the root cause, not just cover it with make up so the natural beauty would shine through.
What set me apart is that I’m bilingual in Spanish and English, and I’ve spent many years in the beauty industry, adapted to trends and constantly learning. I bring strong customer service skills from years of experience and a true passion for my work clients can feel that. In this industry, you can’t make passion, and I always try to make every visit worthwhile and unforgettable.
What am most proud of in this industry is that I never give up, no matter how hard it got or how many doors closed in my face. I learned that things happen for a reason, and every challenge has made me stronger. I don’t see my clients as a dollar sign. They’re more like friends and am more like there skin besties we call it. Whether it’s clearing acne, softening wrinkles , or celebrating life milestones, I generally care about their successes, and feel honored to be part of their lives.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Yes, I would choose the same profession again because I truly believe I was meant to do this. Touch is powerful, and so many people need it. I’ve always loved helping others and being a people person, even before I was in skin care. Growing up, I would help my grandmother with her skin care classes, by cleaning up and watching her teach, and even going with her to sell skincare products door to door. In a way, I’m doing something very similar now teaching my client about their skin care and providing them with the right products, just in a more modern setting.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I believe the key to succeed in this field is staying humble and always being a student. This industry changes quickly, so continuing education, whether through classes, conventions, or learning from your peers is essential. I don’t see other Estheticians as competition, we’re all unique in our own ways, and there’s room for everyone. That mindset keeps me motivated and to keep growing in this industry is so important.
