We were lucky to catch up with Shantae Arline recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shantae, thanks for joining us today. Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
The best advice I ever gave a client was, to give herself grace as she gives grace to other people. She came into her appointment frustrated that everything wasn’t going right . I asked her before getting in the chair “can we pray”? She said yes and after praying I gave her the advice I wish someone would have given me be grateful to yourself ❤️.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Shantae and I am a licensed Esthetician/Mua. I am also the owner of Skin Candy Essentials, a natural skin care line. I fell in love with makeup in 2012 and decided to further my passion by attending esthetician school Spring of 2018. My skin care line caters to people who are struggling with hyperpigmentation, acne and helps to maintain skin integrity through daily regimen.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2020 During the height of the pandemic I had just leases my own independent beauty suite. I was nervous and scared yet excited! As I positioned myself to start doing small services within the COVID limitations I caught covid . I though to myself I’m not going to be able to make this months rent if I’m sick and can’t take clients. I panicked and questioned did I make the right step?. A week after being cleared by my doctored I posted I was open for business . I was booked to capacity that day and make my rent in that one day.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There was many moments I had to pivot in my business. One moment that stands out to me the most was losing my beauty suite. I had been in my suite successfully 2 years and I just knew I would be there till I purchased my own location at least. Well as we all know life can be life. Everything was smooth sailing and then I had a artist move out the suite unexpectedly and the same day my brother passed. I took a mental break for a couple of weeks to get my mind together and thought I’ll just start back afterwards. Yikes, it wasn’t that easy! Clients never quite picked back up and August of 2022 I lost my suite. I was hard on my self, Iand then ultimately I pivoted. I moved back home and began my journey on doing makeup from home again , it was hard and a huge crush to my ego but after all I was still able to fulfill my passion of doing makeup.
