We recently connected with Shanny Slay and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shanny , thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I always knew I would be in this industry but didn’t know exactly how. As a child I use dance (which was something I’ve always loved to do) would have been the door opening but it was actually modeling. I was in the industry on and off for 12 years. I came back in 2020 as a creative director and visual artist and I haven’t looked back.
Shanny , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the industry when I was 23. I started the pursuit of modeling. I grew up dancing and choreographing that I thought dance would be the door to open but it was more so the modeling. I did runway, competition, music videos, etc. I was in the industry on and off for 12 years. I told myself that I wanted to be more own driver that I can control my own projects. I stumbled across people who may not have believed in me liked I would of hoped or down played me for others so I made it my mission to show what I can do in hopes to be a blessing to others and show that they’re worth it. What sets me apart is how I move. I have many ideas that include others that can definitely be beneficial and I try to make sure that I stay focused and positive no matter what. I will always be me rather people like it or not. So with that said, I am working on my talent management company where I can help aspiring artists build their brand and sharpen their skills with opportunities. I want to shine light on those people who normally get overlooked but are extremely talented. My company will help build and grow their brand offer services to help navigate through each stage of development. I’m very proud of myself on how far I’ve come, from graduating with straight A’s from Los Angeles Film School. To bring featured in multiple articles, working with my first client while developing my company, networking with other professionals and talking about collaborations. There’s so much more but you have to follow to see.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes there is! I want to have my legacy. I want to create a space for artistic creativity can be expressed and enjoyed. I want to bring back a time where talent was all people focused not what you do in your house or who you lay with. I’m a very private person so I prefer not to share unless I have to about my personal life. All the focus should be on my talents and gifts. My personal life shouldn’t overshadow that. I’m determined to leave something for my children and for them to continue on. I want to make it where others can always have a place to shine even if it’s for just a moment. I’m really passionate about that. I know extremely talented individuals that If they had the exposure to show and share, no telling how much further they would be.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I would say the freedom. Being creative and having the freedom to do what you love is a beautiful thing. Not being able to do so can become overwhelming and stifling especially when things are slow you become more frustrated because you can’t create the way you want so you have to sit on it and sometimes your sitting on it for a while. Which can be very , very, VERY annoying.
