We were lucky to catch up with Shannon Watkins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Shannon thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When you were first starting out, did you join a firm or start your own?
I originally joined a firm and started at Keller Williams on a team as a buyers agent. I made this choice because I knew I needed training. When in real estate school, I quickly realized that you didn’t learn too much that pertained to the actual business. Looking back I 100% believe I made the right choice.
When I started real estate it was in the prime days. Homes were selling left and right, and no real marketing was needed. The team that I joined had a ton of leads and within my first year, I was one of the top-selling agents in the company.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started out trying to sell my house with a team called the Sexton Durham team. During this time I had started referring them business until one of them told me to get my real estate license. In the beginning, it was a lot of work with crazy call days where we were locked in the office until we got an appointment set. Looking back the discipline I learned during this time is truly what helped me be successful and get ahead. I’m not afraid of work and will stay up late, get up early, and really do whatever it takes to make the sales I need to meet my goals and grow my business.
I believe our work ethic sets us apart from everyone else. I truly think we live out our core values and mission statement; A dedicated hard-working team approach that serves our clients with a high level of ethics and integrity.
Core Values;
We DEDICATE ourselves to provide a high level of customer service
We CONNECT people to their homes and community
We SERVE together as a team to provide excellence and aim to exceed expectations in everything we do
We have high ETHICAL standards, demonstrating honesty and fairness in every decision and action
We strive to GROW and continually invest in ourselves through learning
I want people to know they truly become friends more than a client and no one should be treated just as a paycheck.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I think the hardest lesson I’ve had to learn is from running my team, and it’s that you can’t trust people how you want to trust them. People have to earn their place in your business/team and not give those positions away lightly.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think our loyalty and ethics helped build our reputation within our market. If you treat people how you’d want to be treated it really goes a long way. This has helped us turn our clients into true friends, within the last 5 years a huge percentage of my business has been repeated clients and referrals.
