Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shannon Volz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shannon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
When I opened my first buisness it was mid covid outbreak. I had only two thousand dollars to my name and a undying urge to win. Luckily I also had a group of friends that would’ve followed me over a cliff without any hesitation. Did I mention I was also a newly single father of five. No matter the odds I refused to give up. I tattooed for for six to eight hours a day. Picked up my kids and went to the building and grinding out the remodel for as long as physically possible. It took us six months to get the building to where we wanted and opened. Now I’m in my third year and we are flourishing with 9 artist and a piercer. Six months after I got that building up and rolling. I rolled the dice again and roughly nine months later got my second buisness investment up and running. Now going into its second year it also is flourishing with 3 amazing barbers. Take the risk. You will either win or learn but never lose.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been in the tattoo industry for roughly 10 years now. I love everything about it. Tattooing is who iam in the core of my person. Undoubtedly Tattooing saved not only my life but my children’s life’s. I got into by my close friends pushing me to get an apprenticeship. I was super into graffiti and it eventually lead to multiple art meduims. I don’t know what sets me aside from others honestly. Other then I’ll show up everyday day in day out and grind. I will not fail I will push my self beyond my limits to make my dreams come true.
We’d appreciate any insights you can share with us about selling a business.
So my second buisness I had was Stay True Barbershop. I opened along side a good friend and barber Austin Anton. Along with with investments from my cousin and one of my closest friends. So first thing I’d say when going into buisness with others is be translucent at all times possible. Make sure everyone is on same page with dates, percentages ect. Also believe in who you are investing in. Do your home work. I’m forever grateful for the friends I hold close to me and to my family. Always support my descions and help me make them come true.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I’m still learning lessons daily. As soon as you think you got it figured out something switchs up. Never get comfortable. Comfort is where your dreams go to die. Push your self even on the rainy days. The physical and mental rainy days. Remind yourself for the reason why your doing this. Because it’s exhausting and constant so if your reason why isn’t true and pure your not going to make it.
