We were lucky to catch up with Shannon Tillman recently and have shared our conversation below.
SHANNON, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I was at home and my teacher called me. She wanted to know if I would come and take this client. She was initially supposed to have another manicurist but the school was closed.
I was elated so I prepared myself mentally. Praying that this would be a great experience I had the pleasure of meeting one of the sweetest ladies ever. We talked the entire service and she is still my client to this day.

SHANNON, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Shannon Tillman owner of Slayed Klaws. I have always loved the beauty industry and the love of it pushed me back into it. I am a licensed manicurist by the state of Tennessee and my brand is trademarked by Tennessee as well. I have a profound love for people. I started in Cosmetology but left to pursue a regular job. I asked God for a passion and He gave me nails. I started at my dining room table doing my daughters nails. I then moved to my living room and then to another bedroom in my house all while going to school . Once licensed I then moved into a suite, acquired a shop license and opened to the public. I specialize in all forms of nailcare from sculpting to overlay snd everythingin-between including pedicures. I use 2Guys Nail products from their acrylic powder to their top coat. I also make and use my own custom sugar scrubs and cuticle oils which I upsell to my clients. What sets me apart from is others is that I share my love of God with my clients. I am always a listening, unbiased ear for those who wants to talk to me. I am most proud that my clients continue to choose and refer Slayed Klaws to others. I want potential clients to know that Slayed Klaws is a safe place where you are welcomed to let your hair down and relax in a peaceful environment.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I started funding my business through my full time job. Finding starter capital wasn’t something that was easy for me. I tried to get a grant but I got scammed. I bought things off Amazon, Ikea, Temu. I started by buying the collections that 2Guys had before the season would start so I could provide those colors to clients to choose from. Eventually I had all the acrylic powders including the glitter and glow collection.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I find my best source of new clients is word of mouth. I love a good referral. It shows me that my clients trusts and loves the work that I do. I strive to provide a wonderful experience that is worthy of referring to others.
