We were lucky to catch up with Shannon Talbot recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shannon, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
My business idea came to life in the most unexpected way—when my phone fell into a lake during a family vacation in August 2020. For the first time in years, I was completely disconnected from the outside world and fully present with my husband and kids. It was an eye-opening experience. When we returned home, an ad popped up on my computer for a Health and Life Coaching program. I’d never heard of a Health Coach before, but I was intrigued. Within five hours, I had created a business plan, mapped out an exit strategy from my corporate job, and presented it to my husband—all with the goal of making the leap before my 40th birthday, just 10 months away.
But the seed for this dream was planted much earlier. Back in high school, I had two “secret, silly” dreams I thought could never become real jobs—writing and speaking. I vividly remember attending a conference with my Student Council and seeing my first motivational speaker. I couldn’t tell you what he said, but I’ll never forget how he made me feel: inspired, energized, and capable. I knew I wanted to do that for others someday.
Fast forward fifteen years into my corporate career. I’d climbed the ladder, checked all the boxes, and reached a point where I realized it was time to pursue my dream. At a retreat on a stunning horse farm, I worked with a coach who helped me get crystal clear on my vision. I wanted to become a successful entrepreneur helping professionals live happier, healthier, and more fulfilled lives.
What really solidified my mission was seeing the shift in workplaces over the years. Environments that once felt like families had turned into machines where people felt more like cogs than contributors. I wanted to change that. My vision was to create workplaces where people were not only productive but also engaged, connected, and excited to come to work each day. That’s when I knew this was the path I was meant to take.
Today, I help teams connect—like family, but with boundaries and less drama.

Shannon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Shannon Talbot, also known as The Human Connection Expert. With over 15 years in corporate leadership, an MBA, and certifications in Health and Transformational Coaching, I’ve seen firsthand how stress, burnout, and disconnection impact professionals and organizations. My mission is to help leaders and teams thrive by fostering authentic connections that boost engagement, productivity, and well-being.
My journey began after realizing something was missing in workplaces: a sense of belonging. After years of climbing the corporate ladder, I transitioned into speaking, coaching, and facilitating workshops designed to create happier, healthier, and more connected teams. One of my favourite stats to share is that when employees feel a strong sense of belonging, their productivity increases by 45%, and the risk of them leaving drops by 50%. Connection isn’t just good for people—it’s essential for business success.
I offer keynote talks, workshops, and training programs that tackle real workplace challenges like improving communication, reducing burnout, and creating a culture where people feel valued. What sets me apart is my ability to blend research-based strategies with authenticity, humour, and actionable takeaways. My goal is to help teams connect—like family, but with boundaries and less drama!
One of the things I’m most proud of is my book, Breaking Free: Stop Holding Back, Start Being You, which empowers professionals to pursue their goals without guilt or sacrifice. Whether I’m speaking to a room full of leaders or coaching a team through change, I’m passionate about helping people create work lives they’re excited to wake up to.
If there’s one thing I want you to know about my work, it’s this: success doesn’t have to come at the expense of well-being or joy. My talks and workshops are designed to help teams achieve both.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
There are so many lessons I had to unlearn but the biggest one was not tying success solely to money. I was so naive when I started thinking that within six months I’d be making what I made in corporate and when that didn’t happen, I felt like a failure. Yes, you read that right – I thought I was going to be uber-successful in just six months!! It was a ridiculous goal to set and only set me up for disappointment. And the more I focused on not generating the money I wanted, the more that came true!
Through working with coaches and my therapist, I had to look at a broader definition of success for my business and myself that was more than just money. If money was my main goal in life, I would have stayed in corporate. My new definition involved spending more time with my kids, having a flexible schedule and making a positive impact on workplaces. And the more I focused on those things, the more money followed.
I quickly learned that building a business isn’t a sprint; it’s more like running a marathon in heels—challenging, full of surprises, but absolutely worth it in the end!

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When I first started building my audience on social media, I didn’t have a polished strategy—I simply knew I wanted to connect with people in a meaningful way. For me, LinkedIn has been the cornerstone of my social media presence because it’s where my audience—leaders and professionals—is most active.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that authenticity matters more than perfection. My most engaging posts aren’t the ones where I share polished successes—they’re the ones where I talk about my failures, lessons learned, and the vulnerable moments that shaped my journey. Whether it’s opening up about how I stumbled in business or sharing a hard-earned leadership lesson, these stories resonate because they’re real. People want to feel seen, not sold to.
Of course, not every post is a winner. There have been times when I’ve spent far too long crafting what I thought was the perfect post, only to see it get one lonely like. It stings, but I’ve learned that consistency matters far more than any single post. You can’t let one flop derail your momentum.
In addition to posting regularly, I make a point to reach out to my contacts on LinkedIn every week with an authentic, upfront message. I’m transparent about who I am and how I can help, and I never approach it with a hard-sell mentality. This has been a game-changer for building genuine connections and starting meaningful conversations.
For anyone just starting to build their social media presence, my advice is simple: focus on connection over perfection. Share the parts of your story that feel vulnerable or imperfect—those are the moments that will draw people in. Find the platform where your audience is most active, and be intentional about how you engage with them. And remember, building an audience isn’t about instant results; it’s about showing up consistently, being authentic, and creating content that truly serves your audience.
