We were lucky to catch up with Shannon Sherrell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shannon , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
Monique Rodriguez, the founder of Mielle Organics, is my hero. She began her journey as a registered nurse, creating products at home, and has since expanded her business to become one of the top brands in the world. Her story of rising from humble beginnings, much like my own, deeply resonates with me. I admire her burning desire to give back, and I share that same passion. I too aspire to create products that will change people’s lives and inspire others to pursue their visions and dreams.
Shannon , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began my journey as a stylist during my senior year of high school, and I’ve now been styling hair in Tallahassee, FL, for nearly 15 years. I started out as a braider and have since specialized in healthy hair care. My focus is always on the health of my clients’ hair, no matter the protective style they choose. I help clients who want to grow their hair but are unsure of the right steps to take, and I guide those who need to learn how to care for their hair. Additionally, I encourage people to embrace and love their natural hair.
What sets me apart is my deep passion for hair and my genuine love for my clients, who are like family to me. When someone sits in my chair, they’re treated as more than just a number. I’m committed to ensuring their happiness and making sure they enjoy their time with me. My goal is for my clients to know they are not alone in their hair journey. Get ready to learn and evolve with me.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience on social media through diligence, authenticity, and consistency. People are drawn to stylists who genuinely enjoy their work, showcase their styles confidently, and share their portfolios online. Social media is an invaluable tool for many businesses, offering a free and accessible way to reach your target audience. As a new business owner, it’s crucial to leverage all available marketing avenues. For over 14 years, social media has been a cornerstone in building my clientele.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn the belief that those around me always knew what was best for me. As an entrepreneur, it’s crucial to follow your heart and trust your gut when it comes to your business ventures. While your decisions need to align with your financial responsibilities, true entrepreneurship often involves taking risks that others might not understand or agree with. You have to be comfortable with being misunderstood and still move forward on your entrepreneurial path. You’ll never know what’s possible until you try, and scared money doesn’t make money. These are lessons I had to learn, and they guide me every day.
