We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shannon Massey Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shannon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I find meaning in every project I do. I’m helping clients succeed and bringing their creative dreams to life.
However, the most meaningful project I’ve worked on to date is Curse of the House of Savage. A pulp horror film on Girls To The Front! Productions development slate.
Given the war on the trans community now more than ever it’s really important to have positive representation of the trans community. COTHOS has a trans lesbian lead, in a healthy committed relationship with a bi woman. They have a fully developed relationship, she has a fully fleshed out character. I can’t wait to share the project with the world.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Shannon Massey Smith and I own Girls To The Front! Productions. I started working in the industry in 1998 as an extra in commercials and got my first gig as a PA on a commercial in 2000 then worked my way up the ladder from there. I began casually working in writing services (script doctor, ghostwriter, sensitivity & authenticity reader, developmental editor, proofreader) in 2002, professionally in 2004. On set I’m working to be the change we need to see in our industry. While we’re making progress we still have a long way to go. We need not just a minimum living wage but a maximum wage too in order to battle pay inequity. We need to have a good work life balance. GTTF! is committed to a maximum work day of 12 hours (we aim for 8) with at least a 12 hour turn around. This is because I know how awful it is to work 22 hour days and nap in my car for 2 hours between one day wrapping and call time the next. When you work with me as a freelancer or with GTTF! as a company you know you’re going to be uplifted, supported, and empowered.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I think like a lot of people that started in the industry in the late 90s there were a lot of very unhealthy practices we had to unlearn. The worst was, “I had to struggle and all these terrible things happened so it can’t be better for anyone else. Everyone needs to suffer.” Which is an incredibly unhealthy mindset regardless of your industry. We work to make things better for the people behind us. They work to make it better for the people behind them. And so on.
I remember the first time I heard students asking how much they were going to get paid and thinking, “do you know how many projects I worked on for free? As a student you want to be paid to learn?” Then thinking wait, hold on, no, I deserved to be paid, they deserve to be paid. We deserve to make money off this. Now I actively fight to make things better for as many people as I can.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
To be the change we need to see. To prove that you can make great movies without sacrificing health/wellness and work/life balance.
I want to show everyone that by paying the people at the very top who don’t necessarily need the money less, we can make a monumental difference for the people at the bottom living paycheck to paycheck.
